Barbecho

Se denomina barbecho a la tierra que no se siembra durante uno o varios ciclos vegetativos, con el propósito de recuperar y almacenar materia orgánica y humedad. También se refiere simplemente a la tierra que se deja descansar por uno o varios años. Habitual en la rotación de cultivos.

Durante el tiempo que permanece sin cultivar es sometido a una serie de labores con objeto de mejorar su predisposición al cultivo.

Fallow land

Cropland that is not seeded for a season; it may or may not be plowed. The land may be cultivated or chemically treated for control of weeds and other pests or may be left unaltered. Allowing land to lie fallow serves to accumulate moisture in dry regions or to check weeds and plant diseases.

As a method of restoring productivity, rotation of crops is now preferred to fallowing, which is considered wasteful of humus and nitrogen.
