This castle is placed in the same hill, or mote, which occupied the primitive city of Medina of the Field, in the province of Valladolid, to 52 kilometers of his capital. Placed in proximity of confluence of river Adajuela and Zapardiel, this gigantic fortitude rises majestic on a hillock in the middle of the Castilian flatness. One of the castles is more grantes, together with those of Peñafiel and Gormaz.

Two WS.

The current castle settles on linens of wall of the XIIth century, probably of Arab origin, being constructed in the XIIIth, XIVth and XVth centuries, with important works realized by Enrique IV and Kings Católicos in the XVth century. The current castle was constructed in 1440, according to order of king Juan II of Castile, by the family Fonseca on the remains of a Moslem fortitude. It was designed by Fernando Carreño and Alonso Niño, and constructed by two Arab artists, Abdala and Alí de Lerma. In epoch of Kings Católicos, it was strengthened and it turned in " the best European castle into the form of transition ".

In the Castle Juana la Loca resided. Later it was a prison of State and it shut up important personages of the political life. Here there was shut up César Borgia, fascinating personage of the political life of the Renaissance whom the Big Captain made prisoner in Naples. Shut up in this castle, he could flee thanks to the complicity with the count of Benavente. It sheltered in Navarre since the king, Juan de Albrit, was a brother of his wife.

The exterior enclosure is formed by the barbican that surrounds completely the castle, done of concrete and brick, and in a style decididamente Mudejar. To him one gains access crossing the pit for a drawbridge, today I fix, defended by cylindrical towers. In this enclosure there are complicated underground galleries of shot, stores, dungeons and alleys. On the door of entry the weapon of Kings Católicos is.

The interior enclosure is formed by four towers and a square court in which there get ready the different dependencies on the castle, wine vaults, blocks, etc.. In this enclosure there survives a narrow camera, of the XVth century, covered with polychrome vault of Mudejar style, so called " Lookout of the Queen " because it was the place used by her. In his origin, it had no windows on the outside.

The fabulous tower of the homage, the highest of Castile, was constructed in the XVth century in epoch of Kings Católicos. It is a thick tower of 40 meters high constructed in brick, which presents two garitones and is crowned by a balconcillo with battlements. It possesses several flats with domed cameras and she is decorated with rich Mudejar artesonados.

There survive primitive remains of mortar of lime and boulders that belong to a previous castle (XIIth century). The walls of this castle are of concrete of the epoch and they are re-dressed in brick pink and realized in Mudejar, prevailing style in those years. This provides to him a picturesque and peculiar aspect.

Wonderful capture of this intriquing Spanish castle as its red sandstone is seen in such fine detail. The green trees and blue sky contast wonderfully with the old castle and the birds add nice definition to this fine photo.

Nice colors and good composition with the strong fiagonal crossing the picture. The play of lights and shadow is very well done and we can image the sun coming on the right side.
Have a nice day.

Hola Charo.

Hola Charo,
mighty walls, good POV to show how large the fortification is. With good strong contrasts and depth. Your good note and the workshops give us a good imagination of that place.
Lieben Gruss, Ulf

Hi Charo,
Perfectly composed showing the length of the walls creating depth. The birds in flight creates a lovely dynamism to the picture. Image quality is very good and so as your description. Well captured and presented. Excellent work! Tfs

Bon dia Charo,

Felicitaciones.

Hi Charo,

Great point of view .. I love the light on the stone .. and especially the birds .. tremendous image .. out of a romanticized medieval dream ..

take care,

John

Charo, this is a great shot and a great note explaining what wonders we are seeing. The color and detail are really super but what are all the holes in the side of the structures, they look like bird nesting places but they may be just windows, I can't tell.
