Palacio del Marqués de Santa Cruz, Don Álvaro de Bazán, que fue Almirante de la Armada y artifice del éxito en la victoria de la Batalla de Lepanto que por su conducta hacia sus hombres Cervantes le llamó "padre de los soldados".

El Palacio sigue la tipología de los mejores palacios renacentistas italianos. Empezó a construirse en 1564 y se terminó en 1588 según los proyectos de Giovanni Castello "El Bergamasco" junto al que trabajaron Giovanni Bautista Olamosquín, arquitecto y escultor (desde 1571), Maese Domingo y Maese Alberto, maestros de obra y maestro mayor. Fue edificado junto al Camino Real, trayecto obligado desde la Corte hacia Andalucía.

La singularidad se da en su interior con la profusión de 8000 m2 de pinturas al fresco decoradas en las bóvedas y en los paramentos de las galerías alta y baja. Las pinturas, de estilo manierista, realizadas íntegramente por maestros italianos, al igual que la obra de fábrica, yesería y carpintería.

Su ubicación sorprende a primera vista. Hay que tener en cuenta que eran tierras de su dominio, heredadas de su padre, almirante y general de los Reyes Católicos que recibió por los servicios prestados, sin olvidar su inclinación por un locus amoenus, de descanso y retiro, conforme a las ideas humanistas de "comodidad" y "belleza".
