Photographer’s Note

Rising up from the parched countryside of Castilla-La Mancha, Cuenca is a well-preserved medieval town perched above the deep gorges of Jùcar and Huecar.

The Cathedral is built on the site of a mosque and is a combination of many architectural influence, like his façade, a 16th-century Gothic experimentation, while the interior reveals a early 13th-century nave, a 15th-century apse and a 20th-century restoration.

I stayed there for about an hour and took over 50 photos of the same tripod view, and only this one stand out from the others, because of the glowing effect from the church. When you shoot at the »Blue Hour», there’s only one very short moment where the balance between natural and artificial create interesting effect.

In this case, there was still just enough light in the sky, so the artificial light projected on the façade is almost imperceptible. The whole scene almost feel like it as been shot on daylight, but this is a 30 second exposure.

Bonjour Andre,
Il y a déjà un petit temps que nos chemins ne se sont croisé, alors une petite visite s'impose..!
Entre temps des bien belles images sont venu s'ajouter à ta belle galerie..! Comme celle-ci d'ailleurs qui est très belle également. Un excellent point de vue et une belle perspective, un peu comme une image 3D...:) Une belle photo Andre..!

Hi Andre,
I see you are using the 10-22 on a 5D. Is that working? In the Exif stands a focal length of 18m/m. I always learned that the 10-22 was no good on the FF and the 1.3 sensors and could only be used on the 1.6 sensors with an EFS mounth.
Although the light is truly wonderful, just as the composition lines and your pov, i am missing ultimate sharpness. Did you forget that in the pp or is that because of using that 10-22?

Excellent how you captured during the blue hour this illuminated monument.
The quality is a reason to buy the Canon 5D, at least for me, which means it is outstanding.

Pas mal cette contre plongée au grand angle, il y a de la distorsion, mais cela dynamise l'image.

You have captured that "blue moment" very well here. The lighting is fantastic, it is hard to tell that there is artificial light present. I like your perspective showing us some depth instead of the straight ahead facade of the church. You have nice color and excellent DOF.

Bien que la patience ne soit pas toujours récompensée, malgré ce qu'on en dit, je crois qu'elle est un élément essentiel à de nombreux petits bijoux. 50 photos en une heure pour la même prise, eh bien tu es presque aussi fou que moi. Bon, peut-être un peu plus finalement! ;)
Sérieusement, j'aime beaucoup les tons chauds qui émanent de ta photo. Et le petit plus qui me fait craquer, le lampadaire étoilé à l'extrême droite. Une vraie petite étoile de Bethléem, histoire de se mettre dans l'ambiance de Noël! Évidemment, le grand angle donne toujours cette impression d'espace. Une photo à la André Roberge : impéccable!
En passant, j'ai lu ta réponse à Henk au sujet de la netteté. C'est un problème fréquent quand on affiche des photo dans le web. On y perd souvent en netteté et en saturation. Mes premières photos en était très affectées. Jusqu'au moment où je suis tombée sur le "script" du Luko qui marche généralement bien et que plusieurs membres utilisent. Tu peux le lire ici et ici. Il est important de noter que Luko suggère de "resizer" (c'est quoi le mot français? honte...) ta photo à 1500 pixels d'abord. L'autre truc aussi que j'utilise, c'est d'ouvrir le fichier dans mon navigateur pour voir l'apparence que la photo prendra dans le web. S'il y a lieu, j'ajuste. Voilà!

Une note particulièrement intéressante à la fois pour la description du lieu et le passage technique.
La Cathédrale à la couleur de pierre claire se détache à merveille devant ce ciel du soir.
J'ai lu et je partage l'opinion de Henk ; moi sur les conseils de DIDI, je retravaille mes photos prises en format RAW dans le logiciel DIGITAL PHOTO PROFESSIONAL. Tu trouveras ce logiciel sur le site de CANON, quand je l'ai téléchargé, il était en free. Il me sert à améliorer éventuellement la balance des blancs, la netteté, la courbe RVB et à convertir en JPEG.

He he le 10-22 sur le 5D tu l'as monte au fer a souder ??? ;-))
Meme a 16mm ce qui est en fait comme a 10mm le distortion est assez marquee, j'ai aussi souvent ce pb, ca rendrait surement mieux en stitchant deux vues verticales.
Pour la technique ben je pense que Henk t'a donne une piste interessante et j'adhere aussi a ce qu'a ecrit Claire. Sinon le sujet et le timing sont tout bons pour moi, ainsi que le f/22 pour etoiler l'etoile. Si tu peux resoudre ton petit souci de rendu ca vaudra le coup de la reposter celle la.

Salut Andre, nice to see you posting again! This is a gem of an architecture photo, I don't see any horisontal or vertical line, everything is somehow inclined, very good use of a wide angle and nice POV choice. By the way, the cathedral facade is astonishing with the false windows...

I will keep visiting you from time to time because the three photos of Spain are a promess of a better one in the future. Nontheless I like the moment of the day you´ve chosen here to portrait this cathedral that is not among the best here but that you have achieved to look great in this photo. I hope you enjoyed Cuenca and I enjoyed Montreal long ago. Take care.

Je trouve cette photo superbe bien que très peu académique. Les "règles" existent pour être transgressées. Elles le sont agréablement ici.

Seul bémol déjà mentionné, un léger flou suite au redimensionnement.

En regardant la photo thumbnail, je croyais voir Notre-Dame de Paris. Mais de par ta note explicative, je vois un spécialiste de la lumière, doté d'une patience d'ange pour réussir ce cliché. Bravo André

This is an excellent photograph of Cuenca cathedral. The POV is very well chosen. The people i your shot were very static because there is very little movement blur despite the seconds exposure.

This is a beautiful shot of this exterior cathedral. You did well to take many, and this one in particular is beautiful. It looks like a beautiful night, I am suprised that there are such few people.

I wish I had made a stop to Cuenca in my trip to Spain earlier this year.
