NATIONAL PARK OF TIMANFAYA

This National Park, with an extension of 200 km2, seems to confront us with an apocalyptical vision: this land was born of hundreds of fire-spitting volcanos.

In or on your preferred transport medium (bus or camel) you will traverse a sea of petrified lava and volcanic ashes. Some of the craters of the volcano Montaña de Fuego ("Mountain of Fire") are still active, and just centimeters from the surface temperature arrives to some 400ºC. If you pour water on a crater, it will vaporize in a fraction of a second, and if you put small branches there, they will start to burn immediately. . In some of the Restaurants in Timanfaya you even can have your steak grilled on a volcanic crater ...
After such a kind of lunch you certainly will be still more receptive for the miracles nature has done here ...

The last great volcanic out-break on Lanzarote was, by the way, in 1732, when large parts of the island were destroyed. In 1824 some smaller craters broke out again.

The island and the park were declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1993. Timanfaya also is used by scientists to examine how vegetation returns to new land.

-------------------------
"What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow

Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man,

You cannot say, or guess, for you know only

A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,

And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,

And the dry stone no sound of water. Only

There is shadow under this red rock,

(Come in under the shadow of this red rock),

And I will show you something different from either

Your shadow at morning striding behind you

Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;

I will show you fear in a handful of dust."

(The Burial of the Dead, T. S. Eliot)

Hello Leonor. Very strange landscape. The texture of the surface and the forms created by nature give this place a foreign, perhaps even out of this world look. Good perspective to capture this image and the inclusion of the road makes us realize that this place is on this planet.

Roberto

Hello Leonor,

The two volcanic peaks provide an effective bracket for the roadway , and the cars, in turn, offer a useful scale. What desolate countryside, and what a superb vantage point for this shot. Well composed, beautifully exposed. I had never thought of the volcanic origins of the Canary Islands, but of course that makes sense. They are right over the mid-ocean rift. Very good note to accompany the image, with a classic from TS Elliot.

Warm regards,

Bulent

Hi Leonor,
This is indeed an interesting site and without looking at the cars I could not imagine the size of these cones. The textures are beautifully captures with the right tonal qualities. The two straight lines divide the space into exciting portions. Lovely shot!!
Regards.

Ola Leonor,
Your photo shows how barren this landscape is,
one imagines when there, you could be on the moon.
Like the glow from the molten lava below that your photo shows.
Nice capture, with good notes.
Thanks for sharing.
Regards
Rob.

Ola Leonor

I like the symmetry between the 2 volcanoes. A good, high pov, with the fg crater clearly visible. Reasonable sharpness considering the zoom. An interesting note on these Canary Island volcanoes. Tfs!

Hola Leonor...

Hello Leonor,
The volcanic cone and the barren land arouns it look imrpessive from your vantage point. I like the inclusion of the green plant in the corner as a show of life. Composition is very nice, but there is a sharpness problem. Regards,
Hakan

Hola Leonor,

Cordialmente
Charo

Hej Leonor,
This is a very impressive view over the volcanic area. All black and grey and no green from trees or plants at all (apart from the bottom right hand corner; nice inclusion!). The texture on the ground is beautiful too. Well captured and thanks for sharing!

Lars

Hola Leonor!
Salutations!...
Emilius

Hello Leonor,
Nice view of these old volcanos. This park seems to be beautiful. It seems that the picture is noisy, but I think it is the high compression due to the number of stone and small detail of the pictures?
Well done.
Salutations
Jacques

Strong nature, also wonderful, and beautiful image from you, Leonor, excellent high POV view and beautiful landscape of these amazing volcanos, well done, compliments.
Ciao
Vinicio

Ola Leonor.
Fantastica foto,otima iluminacao.
Parabens.

ottimo lavoro

Bonsoir, mon amie Leonor,
Philippe

I have been to quite a few volcanoes in the last few years but I haven't seen one as stereotypical as this one here. Whilst I knew the Canary Islands were volcanic it had somehow escaped me that they still had some active ones. Amazing photo. The detail of the tiny ribbon of road is excellent for scale.
Kath

A desertidão é impressionante e particular.

Hi Leonor
Very fantastic place.
It's seems that the eruption was recent because there is no trees.
Interesting point of view.
Well done.

ola my friend Leonor,
good sunday for you
cricri

fica bem Ana:)

Leonor,
The way you placed the two hills into the frame is fantastic, providing a nice and balanced picture.
Very nice,
Regards,
JB.

Felicitaciones.
Saludos.

Hello Leonor,
It looks like the surface of a different planet. Your POV is great. Muted colours match the atmosphere of the image. The site looks really inetersting.
Well done! Congratulations :)

F
