A Window at Real Cartuja, Valledemossa
 |

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
A somewhat different posting today - one from our Mallorcan holiday last year.
This shot is taken from the terrace outside one of the monks' cells in the Monastery Real Cartuja, in Valledemossa on the west side of Mallorca. The photograph was actually taken from the same terrace as this picture.
Frederic Chopin and his partner George Sand (an authoress) spent a year living in one of the cells in this monastery over the winter of 1838/39 in the belief that the simple monastic life in a warm climate might not only inspire their creative skills but might also be beneficial to the health of Chopin who had contracted tuberculosis, or "consumption" as it was then known. He was to die of this disease ten years later in 1849.
As it happened, their time in Mallorca proved fairly disastrous. George Sand wrote a book entitled "A Winter in Mallorca" during her time there: around Mallorca you will find copies of it for sale, keenly promoted in the local bookshops. It is rather doubtful if many Mallorcans have read it, because it is for the large part very critical and, in some parts unjustifiably damning, of the Mallorcans and their way of life.
However, a visit to the monastery is very worthwhile and "Chopin's cell" cantains many interesting artifacts, not least his Mallorcan piano.
Image shot in RAW, edited and converted to TIFF in Canon's DPP then adjusted, resized and sharpened in Elements 2.

Hola John,
Excellent shot, nice composition and colours.
Well done,
Josep,
Hello John,
First of all, congratulations on achieving 1000 points!
This is a lovely summery picture - the sharp textures of the stone stand out well against the out of focus distance. The Morning Glory is soaking up the sun, and over all there is a great sense of peace and quiet.
Regards,
Peter.
Hi John,
Nice shot! I really like the contrast of the tones here with the bright green leaves, orange wall and purple flowers in the foreground, and the duller green and brown in the background. Good textures and composition including the archway. Well seen!
Claudia

Hi John,
Great depth in this picture, it is really two-dimensional. The sharp foreground is very much emphazised by the blurry background. Attractive light and attractive colours. A different picture!
Greetings from snowy Gothenburg
