This is the very same bay in eastern Menorca which I showed you in this previous photograph which was taken on a clear evening. This one was taken the previous day from the opposite side of the bay and you can just see, at far left, the boardwalk below the cliffs from where I took the evening shot.
We were lucky not to get rain this day because the sky suddenly darkened and I thought we were going to have a heavy downfall of rain - but we were lucky: the clouds passed by and the sunshine reappeared a few moments later.
You can see a larger version of this photograph on "beta" TE here.

I love the P.O.V.of this picture, with the curving walkway.Lots to see with the little boats all in a neat arc and beautiful houses cradling the whole scene.
Beautiful threatening sky.

This place reminds me a lot like Procida Island off the coast of Naples.
I became a big fan of these intimidating sky once getting bored by the evenly blue sky, that for me has the same uninteresting appeal as the milky/white ones... But we can select them the same way we order pizza, so I have a lot of them, deep in my archives... :-p))
This kind of textured sky add so much character to any given image, half the job is done!... The other 50% is to find the proper subject/landscape/cityscape that has the potential to embellish the rest of the scene.
I think you have found that perfect 50% that counterbalances the dark sky with bright hues and vibrant pastels tones. You have found a great angle to make our eyes navigate through the scene in a curvy way that let us appreciate all the charm of this cozy bay.

Hello ,John ,
I enjoy a lot this kind of sky . In combination with the light , these are magic conditions for the photographer .
A very fine port , with white and colored houses and the little boats mooring along the ciurve of the quay .

now that would be the perfect HDR sky :)
it has HDR written all over it, but i know you don't practice hdr haha
looks great John, that is one atmospheric set of clouds forming.
and its amazing how much light still passes through to the town below.
interesting to note that all the buildings seem to be relatively the same height...no towering churches?
and of course the wrap around compo always works so well doesn't it.
I wish I could cut and paste this sky into all of my photos :)
enjoy your quiet Sunday

This is a really lovely photo of a colourful and inviting scene filled with detail. Your viewpoint gives us a perfect view of this pretty harbour with the restaurants lining the seafront. I like all the splashes of colour from the buildings and the buoys on the dark water. The boats add foreground interest and lead to the harbourside of the town in a gentle curve. The moody, dark grey sky is a specially attractive element which nicely illuminates the colours of the town. A beautiful shot that makes me long for summer holidays. Well done.

Hello, excellent pov that gives us the curve into the scene. The dark and dramatic sky combined with the colorful buildings creates a beautiful image.

Hello John, I still use only beta, so I have this big photo in perfect size at once. Just full screen and so many details to see. Fantastic view of the bay, with boats, bars, houses and even some people, not too many, just to make the photo more lively. You found the perfect POV and realized it superbly. and the sky is like ffrom the painting, I agree, more interesting that just blue.
Warm regrads MAlgo

oooh yes this grey sky is what makes the photo for me. It looks very threatening and contrasts so nicely against the white and pastel tones of the architecture in the town. I can see you have used Layers very cleverly and seamlessly here, perhaps brightening the town and darkening the sky, and selectively sharpening or defining it. The post processing is admirable and quite immaculate. I also like the curve of the bay which leads the eye around the image. And what a lovely place to holiday.

once upon a time Menorca was a place I went to almost every year. Not been back for a fair time but shots like this make me question why? Lovely enticing sweep and lots of immaculate detail to take in. Looks all the more wonderful under a moody sky too!
Have a good week - B.

This is a threatening sky, but isn't it strange how nature tends to be at its most beautiful when it is threatening us. The sky reminds me of the scene from the very end of the movie Ghostbusters, it has that otherworldly feel to it. I love how you composed this whole scene, with the wide seeping arc of the bay, the beautiful colorful buildings, and topped off by this dangerous looking cloud formation above. All combine into a beautiful scene.
Thanks as always

In a way the light, colours and the clouds of this photo remind me a bit of the first photo I posted from Poland last week, if I may be so impertinent to claim any similarities with any of your photos. The differences are much bigger because the small towns of Menorca don't look at all like Warsaw, and your camera will almost always guarantee a better result than I could ever achieve with my compact cheapie. Apart from the light, especially among the expressive clouds, I also enjoy the nice curve of the quay and the many colourful buoys spread across the water.

John, while the sky in this image is really impressive, what I love most about it is the point of view, with the curve of the waterfront leading all the way to the back of the image. A beautiful collection of buildings (and boats). Thanks.

"Poetic license"...I like that! Yes, I did read your message to Gert. :) I'm far from having an eye for detailed processing work, but I did think there was something going on around the low lying outlines of the clouds...an ever so slight halo separating the skyline from the sky itself.
Now, that being said...I personally don't give a hoot about that minor detail because I think what you've done to enhance the atmosphere, literally in this case...outweighs any technical aspects. I've always been a strong proponent of "content over quality," and I love the dramatic shift in mood that the darker, heavier clouds provide.
Speaking of quality, there's no lack of it here, each detail is clearly defined and admirable. Quality will always project an interest...no one wants to look at a blurry, off balance, careless shot...so it's safe to say, you've encompassed both regards succinctly.
It's a lovely view, consciously composed to best showcase the town and harbor in a single frame. For my personal tastes, it's that brooding sky that really steals the show and gets my attention in contrast and mood. And there's my "two cents." :) Have a good one.

whilst I do enjoy the lovely curve of the bay, the dark brooding sky and the complementary colours it`s the figure of that lone gentleman strolling along the quay side that grabs my attention, perfectly placed on a third you must have had to wait ages.....
Seriously,it`s a most attractive shot, well composed and of course very clearly detailed.
Best regards Les.

Technical perfect taken, excellent made with lovely perspective and depth image.
I like the curve of the quai with all the nice small boats.
Also your imminent sky makes these picture very well, and excellent contrasting against the totally picture.
Excellent composition, lovely captured.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice day,

Attractive curving waterfront view of Menorca, the boats lined up, housing and buildings stacked along the pathway, and the storm clouds threatening above.
asajernigan (20003) 2014-07-09 6:19
This is a great capture showing fine contrast between the bright colors of the buildings and the dark sky. The walkway and boats form a nice curve that leads the eye through the photo. The diffused light brings out the colors of the buildings nicely.
