Young girls at play in Binibequer, a photo from Menorca, Balearics

Photographer's Note

Binibequer is a beautiful little seaside village in southwest Menorca, its architecture being very quaint and its buildings all having brilliantly whitewashed walls and even roofs. The brilliant sunshine this afternoon, the white buildings and strong shadows made this quite a challenge for the photographer - which was one reason why Philip Dunn brought us here during our photographic holiday.

These young girls were having a quiet moment during a game of Hide & Seek for which the narrow alleyways here are perfectly suited.

Shot in RAW and converted and edited in PSE9.

P.S. Browsing through TE, I have just noticed this picture, uploaded two days ago and taken in the very same place as mine! Because of the lighting, that picture must have been taken earlier in the day (mine was late afternoon). What a coincidence!

Hi John,
Thank you for sharing this lovely mediterranean all-white architecture. A difficult shot given the predominence of whites and the strong light but you managed it very well. No over-exposition on the walls, great job !

John, this is an every day scene captured so well. A hard exposure to get right but you did. I like the scene because it reminds me of Mallorca. While some may have a siesta the kids of today prefer to plot and plan the day's play!

Hello John !

The coincidence is amazing and more taking into account that Binibeca has many special corners and details to enjoy photography ...I hope you had fancied your stay in Menorca because this island is fantastic ! ...I´m living here since last April when i was destined to Alaior for my job as a Notary ... So if you come back we can have a beer together and organize a photographical route if you feel like it ! :)

Hello John,
Before reading your note I thought that in this place, and with this light, I would probably not even have considered taking a picture. I agree that this is quite a challenge, and I am amazed how well you managed to expose every part correctly. Besides, it's a fine view and the girls were at the right spot at the right moment.

So far behind with my TE'ing !
I have to say I would not have seen this, much less taken it, nor ( which is my point in commenting ! ) if I had, would I have succeeded as well as you.
This is a masterly presentation, in very awkward lighting, namely the strong overhand reflected light, and the gloom of the shadow. Good work. A good tutor may have had a hand ?!
BTW - your link is broken, or faulty, it would be good to see the alternate you refer us to.

Hello John,

...these girls' things are the same important everywhere i.e.. the most important in the world.

I really like the atmosphere of the girlish chat, they are totally absorbed in it and do not care about the beauty around them. Great place, great composition, perfect light management where the white stays white in difficult conditions.

Hi John, Such white walls in strong sunlight is really a challenge for a photographer. How to preserve it white, not burn or blue? But with the guidance of your photographic master you did wonderfully. I like the stairs, and also white roof tiles are quite rare. It was cold there, the kids have warm cloths. Very strange with disappearing link and photos.
