Photographer’s Note

This past spring, I participated in a two week bicycling tour of Mallorca. This was my first trip to the island and I greatly enjoyed the time there. The scenery was fantastic, a real feast for the eyes. Most of the time we spent in the northern half of the island which is much more rugged than the flatter southern half.

Cycling conditions were excellent, too. Although the roads were narrow, the traffic was light and the drivers respectful. Also, the roads were in excellent condition (no potholes, smooth surfaces) and even in the mountains had very gentle grades (typically 5%).

This is a very popular place for cycling holidays, especially among Europeans. We met very few other North Americans there, on the other hand. There also appear to be great opportunities for hiking holidays. And conditions are also excellent for a sedentary vacation, too.

This photo was taken along the route from Campenet in north central Mallorca to Port de Soller, in the middle of the northwest coast.
