Despeñaperros es un desfiladero excavado por el río Despeñaperros situado en el municipio de Santa Elena, al norte de la provincia de Jaén (España), que está declarado Parque natural por la Junta de Andalucía en una extensión de 7.649 ha, fundamentalmente por sus valores geológicos y paisajísticos, pero que también posee una destacable flora y fauna.

Se trata de un desfiladero de paredes abruptas, con desniveles de más de 500 m de altura y muy utilizado por el hombre a lo largo de la historia, al ser paso natural de la Sierra Morena y punto de conexión principal entre Andalucía y Castilla-La Mancha, o lo que es lo mismo, con el resto de España. Así, por Despeñaperros han pasado siempre importantes vías de comunicación tanto por carretera, (la autovía radial A-4), como por ferrocarril. El acceso ferroviario era el más importante a toda Andalucía (a excepción de la línea Mérida–Sevilla) hasta 1992, con la construcción de la línea de alta velocidad Puertollano–Córdoba (90 km al oeste).

Despeñaperros is a defile excavated by the Despeñaperros river located in the municipality of Santa Elena, to the north of the province of Jaén (Spain), that is declared natural Park by the Meeting of Andalusia in an extension of 7,649 has, essentially by its geologic and landscaping values, but that also owns a remarkable flora and fauna.

One is a defile of steep walls, with unevennesses of more than 500 ms of height and very used by the man throughout history, to the being natural step of the Brown Mountain range and main point of connection between Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha, or what is the same, with the rest of Spain. Thus, by Despeñaperros always important communication channels as much by highway are past, (the radial railcar A-4), like by railroad. The railway access was most important to all Andalusia (with the exception of the Merida-Seville line) until 1992, with the construction of the line of Puertollano-Cordova high speed (90 km to the west).
