The fruit and vegetable markets are quite popular themes, but they are similar everywhere. Of course, the vendors and customers, they are different and very interesting. But for me, the fish markets are fascinating as living very far of any big water, I know fish only as filets in the fridge. So, when Angel Cornejo asked me, if I wanted to see fish market in Jerez de la Frontera, of course, I was happy to see it.
Usually I have no problems making photos with people, they are friendly, smiling and posing, or just not pay attention to an old unattractive woman with camera. It was not the case here. I saw ugly red fishes and wanted to make photos of them. But the seller shouted at me: No photos!! Haha, I was faster, already pushed the button. I was with guardian Angel so I survived :). Decisive moment, isn't it?
This seller was more friendly

I can understand when someone doesn't wish to be photographed, but to react this way is over the board... And like you are saying, markets are very popular with photographers, they represent good photo opportunities, and the people working there are used to see cameras all the time...
So unless this guy is a convict, or that is fish are famous for being rotten, this nasty fishmonger is a fruitcake. You can be sure I would have confronted him, because excited people like him excite me as well, and I can loose my politeness very fast when confronted with such a schizophrenic.
These markets aren't secret military compound, they are open to the public, for the public, and if you wanted to shoot the fish, you should have been able to do so freely. But now this cuckoo offered you a great sample of an over agitated freak, making a storytelling image that epitomizes what it is to be intolerant and a paranoiac kook.
You should send this photo to the market, so he can see how mad he looks with his knife. You don't exactly look like a terrorist Malgo, he should have offered you a smile and shut the f_ck up.
I salute your guts for not letting yourself being intimidated. This is not only a "decisive moment" image, it is also an "action shot"!!!

Hello Malgorzata ,
Have you to publish this picture ? At first time , i was not sure , because the man seems to be not very happy to be photographied ;) . But with reflections , I think you can do it : As Andre says , this is a public place , for the public . When I'm at work (in a marina) , it is not a problem if someone take a picture of me in my boat . MAy be it would be different in another context .
In rour case , I'don't really understand his reaction , beacuse one could think that you wanted only to catch the ugly (even delicious) red fishes .

His threatening expression, and the gesture with the knife definitely add an element of interest and even danger to your shot. It wouldn't have been as interesting if it was just a photo of a fishmonger at work. Under the circumstances, you did well to capture such a sharp image (even though the fish are a bit out of focus :) Well done!

This is one of the most peculiar and original photos I have seen on TE. It's really quite amusing, but the guy looks a bit crazy. The mildest thing that could be said of him is that he is overreacting, but it's not that he is really threatening you. It makes me think of a Swedish TV photographer who was in Chile during the coup in 1973. He started filming some soldiers on a truck when one of them pointed his gun at him. He continued filming but a second later he was dead. His camera was saved so the photographer's very last pictures could be shown on TV. Good for you that this guy wasn't that crazy :-).

What a clever capture here dear Malgo!!! Just in time, surrounded by his fishes, must have been very tasty fishes!
(I am going to start to Singapore next Saturday....I like the sea in that area!!)
Royaldevon (40990) 2014-08-19 3:42
You did right!
This guy is a maniac, waving a knife in such an aggressive manner! There are places where it is insensitive to take photographs but not here!
I wonder if he is an illegal immigrant or wanted for some other reason! Did you have trouble photographing in any other part of the fish market?
A fine, decisive moment and one that could possibly interest the police!
Have a peaceful day,

Not a man to be argued with, with his filleting knife at the ready! Strange reaction and quite unnecessary. Makes for a superb photo though. Good on you!

been taking a leaf out of Craig's book and disturbing the natives I see here. It makes for a great shot and a real sense of his over reaction. Love the ugly fish analogy - made me smile. Perhaps this catch was outside his EEC quota!
Regards - B.

nice and successful the snapshot in the fish market with the man to deny to take someone photos from his with this 'beautiful and charmy' way.Excellent the light and the colour management with the timing of the shot to be unique.

ifege (10719) 2014-08-19 7:47
Good one of both the vendor and the fish.
We're moving on from Norway on Saturday but you'll have wait and see where!
tyro (26138) 2014-08-19 9:47
This is brilliant!! With a picture like this, you could be a war photographer! It seems as though nothing shakes your nerve - you could probably stand quite happily taking photographs with bullets flying past your ears and bombs exploding all around you!
Funnily enough, I took some pictures in a fish market in Spain (Menorca) earlier this year and I have a picture of a very grumpy fishmonger staring at me in a very unfriendly manner - but at least he wasn't waving a huge knife at me!
Yes, you can see some weird looking fish in these places and I think these ones might be Red Mullet though I'm not entirely sure. They're probably very tasty even although they're not one of God's prettiest creatures.
A brilliant photograph, very courageously taken!
rychem (39397) 2014-08-19 9:52
Gerrit (52099) 2014-08-19 11:30
yeah you sometimes are confronted with these kind of people. I had a argument with a man in Belleville when I took a photo where he just happened to ve too this summer. When they begin to threaten with knives it becomes tricky, but you were bracve and withstood the anger.
Noel_Byrne (32532) 2014-08-19 12:41
I am glad you survived, the combination of the perfect motion capture of the knife waving and the red skinless sea monsters makes this a rather threatening image. I bow to your speed in shooting that you got your shot whether he wanted you to or not :) haha, very good post, I like this a lot!
carlo62 (52050) 2014-08-19 13:43
jcpix (13930) 2014-08-19 19:56
Catch Of The Day, I love the raw emotion you've captured from this guy...even if he is angrily wielding a knife!? And how great that your intention was to photograph the "ugly red fish," but came away with something much more exciting and, dare I say...crazy?!! :) You managed to get both, and for that I applaud your ability to remain focused and calm enough not to miss the opportunity provided. Ugly fish, and apparently, and ugly personality....but cool hair. lol Now, run away! Great shot! Enjoy the new day. All the best. Let's just hope we encounter more affable people, yeah? :)

Serdecznie pozdrawiam i zycze milego dnia,

Hello Malgo - I wonder why this man had such a strong reaction to your taking a photograph? Perhaps those ugly red fish are on the endangered list or undersized or out-of-season? At least he didn't run out from behind his counter and chase you with his blade.... Headlines "Woman killed by Filleting Knife".
A well captured incident. Bravo!
Cricri (122510) 2014-08-20 7:38
macjake (70519) 2014-08-22 1:01
haha...you were quicker :)
and I see what you mean by those ugly red fish...what the heck are they? yikes.
a decisive moment indeed.
these make for excellent memories too :)
ChrisJ (116676) 2014-08-23 1:59
A superb daily life photo with the added bonus of the agitated looking fish monger! Good use of a shallow dof with excellent sharpness (no, not the knife) & good motion blur of the frenzied hand of the man holding the blurred fish knife. The fg red fish add a nice splash of colour. Tfs!
delpeoples (59184) 2014-08-24 16:34
Ciao cara Itchy Feet
hahahaha you are very brave. Taking photos of people is always very confronting for me. But taking photos of angry men brandishing sharp knives is extremely scary. So I give you 10 points just for bravery! Aswell as another 10 points for the great decisive moment you captured. I truly hope you did not end up on the table next to all the red fishes.
PS: Where is your next trip? Siberia?
ManuMay (36285) 2014-08-28 5:01
I like its special mood and the motion and thrill sense!!!
By the way I like very much too walking on markets, seeing the work of clean and prepare fish, they have special skills to do it right and quickly...so it is a real pleasure to enjoy fresh fish...!!!!
