Trafalgar Square with Admiral Nelson's column is probably one of the most beautiful places in London. I guess everybody knows that this refers to the Battle of Trafalgar which happened near a cape with same name. It is to be found along Costa de la Luz, part of Spanish coast west from Gibraltar, facing Atlantic Ocean. It has beautiful beaches but very strong winds.
Cape Trafalgar (Spanish: Cabo Trafalgar) is a headland in the Province of Cádiz in the south-west of Spain. The 1805 naval Battle of Trafalgar, in which the Royal Navy destroyed Napoleon's combined Spanish and French fleet, took place off the cape. It lies on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean, northwest of the Strait of Gibraltar at 36°10'58"N, 6°2'2"W. The International Hydrographic Organization defines the Western limit of the strait as a line that joins Cape Trafalgar to the North to Cape Spartel to the south.
The most prominent structure on the cape is a 34-metre-high lighthouse (51 metres above sea level), the faro de Cabo Trafalgar, built in 1860.
The name is of Arabic origin, corresponding possibly to Taraf al-Gharb (طرف الغرب 'cape of the west') or Taraf al-Ghar (طرف الغار 'cape of the cave/laurel'). In both cases, taraf (طرف) literally means 'edge' or 'extremit and hence refers to a promontory (edge of the land).

nice the view of the lighthouse that dominating of cape Trafalgar with the 'slices' of the ground to create a perfect optical effect.I like the good presentation as the informative note about it.

As always, you have given us a very interesting and informative note - because I'm guessing that most British people have heard about the Battle of Trafalgar but few actually know exactly where that sea battle was fought!
Your photograph is delightful and I'm guessing again - I suspect that you might well have used your ND Grad filter for this one to darken that sky just a little. Whatever you did, it has worked very well indeed! Your symmetrical composition is perfect and the well lit stratified rocks make a fine foreground feature, the distant lighthouse standing proudly against a moody sky.
Lovely light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

ciekawa prezentacja kolumny Nelsona. Ladne, lekko dramatyczne niebo uwypukla kolumne.
Dobre kolory, swiatlo i ostrosc.
Pozdrawiam i zycze milego dnia

Very interesting notes to accompany this fine shot. A very symbolic link with Trafalgar Square!
The f/g shelves of stone, nicely textured, act like steps to guide towards the tall, dominant feature of the lighthouse. It does stand out well against the grey sky.
Have a good day,

An excellent perspective on the lighthouse, perfectly placed as a strong focal point of interest. The stratified rocks seem to make a kind of staircase leading the eye straight to the lighthouse. Lovely contrast between the dark sky and the illuminated foreground. Well done.

This is a nice picture of lighthouse, with an original foreground.
The colors are nice.
willperrett (4837) 2014-02-03 4:41
It's the rock strata in the lower half of this photograph that makes it unusual and therefore interesting: without it, we would just be looking at another lighthouse. By framing as you did, you've created more than a postcard: and that's supposed to be a compliment!
Sergiom (48930) 2014-02-03 4:55

This is a fantastic view! the layers and colors and light of the rock in the foreground is really superb and the towering lighthouse rising above is beautiful. the colors of the sky make the image very dramatic and moody, perfect for such a place! And an informative post for me too, as you say, I had heard of and know of this place, but I think this is the first time I have seen a post from here. beauty of a shot!

Fantastic this vertical composition, which allows us to see from the lighthouse atop the embankment until these rock strata along the sandy shore.
Nice day, giving a magnificent range of colors.
Lighting and sharpness, both are perfect.
Well done. I love the image.
Have a nice day.

interesting shot with the tower and overall these starnge rocks in the Fg, nice light capture and perfect sharpness, tfs.

A very good POV where you have managed to combine the sandstone sediments in the foreground with the impressive lighthouse far away in the background. All details are very sharp, this is an attractive way to combine these two parts of the view.

Ciao e buona serata

Original way to present the charming lighthouse on top of the orange stones
Read only the first part of the note, thanks, I knew about the batle but not about the place, so it took place in the Mediterranean sea?
Thanks for the information

Trafalgar Square is very famous and we all link the name at the battle and I think most people also know that this battle took place in Spain. But I never meet someone who talks about or visits this place in Spain. Well, you're the first one for me.
Personally I find this lighthouse nothing beautiful or special. But you've succeeded in presenting it in an excellent way.
I really like these rock layers on the foreground giving the whole area a special and attractive appearance.
Their warm tones contrast also strong with the clouded sky on top.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Mariusz - How interesting, it's good to see the tie-in with the well-known London location! I like this vertical composition, the FG rock and sand formations are really distinctive and your chosen vantage point is interesting, so often one sees lighthouse shots incorporating views of the sea. Nicely seen! Warm regards Rosemary
abmdsudi (35282) 2014-02-04 6:52
I think your composition with great emphasis on the fg is not unusual that comes to mind with this effect, while attention is still naturally drawn to the main subject - the lighthouse above. Probably colour is not the best here but the sky darker tone creates a great contrast in general. Thks to your excellent notes as well. Fine shot, TFS

I like to much the details of the geological releaf and the lighthouse in the background. Nice point of view.

I like your informative note very much and is a useful bit of history. Your low viewpoint works very well with the interesting strata in the sandy rock, and the lighthouse prominent against the cloudy sky. A very high quality image - TFS.
Kind Regards, Ann

Podoba mi sie pionowy kadr i kompozycja.
Kolorystyka robi klimat tego obrazu.

Good evening Mariusz,
Combined two subjects on one location, and superbly contrast each other: the light-tower atop of the hill, with grey sky aloft, and the close-up view on the rock layers.
The light-brown tone of the sand-rock grined, polished and eroded by winds and water for so many years, and nature did a wonderful job sculpturing it.
Superbly taken the photo, POV well chosen.
Have a nice weekend,

thank you for sharing this very interesting picture for me because I will go there during summer holidays.Excellent low pov and very good sharpness for this fine contribution to TE.TFS.

And what a beautiful postcard it is! Excellent DOF allows us to see both the layers of rock in the f/g and the lighthouse in the distance with great clarity. Your photo seems to emphasize that the lighthouse is standing on solid rock. Interesting and pleasant composition executed with great technique!
delpeoples (50263) 2014-02-10 1:38
What I like about this (aside from its beauty) is how you've broken the so-called Rules. Many would say that you shouldn't have centred the lighthouse and that you shouldn't have put the lump of rock in the foreground like that. Well I am glad you did as I think this is an original, beautifully executed photo. The textures of the rock are superbly rendered and give us a three dimensional feel where they seem to be jutting out towards the viewer. As a matter of personal taste, I find the lighthouse a little too strongly HDR's, but I'm not a big HDR fan and know that you would not have achieved the great definition in the FG rocks without it. So I can't ask for everything. The vertical format certainly adds depth too.
Have a lovely day
holmertz (33489) 2014-02-11 6:44
This is an original and very attractive composition where you have used the layered rock very nicely. I really like the contrasts of the sandy brown rock, the green grass and the dark sky, which makes the light-house look even more impressive.
Cricri (95347) 2014-02-17 11:12

Waylim (24338) 2014-02-21 19:20
As usual a very nice shot with good quality and well balance and symmetrical composition. the light is strong but also the gray sky. You did best you can to get such good quality. Love all the details and nice color with not too much saturation but very rich.
npecanhuk (58184) 2014-02-21 19:43
Interesting and attractive picture!
Special regards to the vertical format, chosen pov, compositon and exposure!
The details of the lower fg are very eye-catching!
TFS - congrats,

You found a great pov! The column seems so small compared to the rocks in foreground and the layers and textures are excellent. A very good composition indeed!
