Photographer’s Note

When you visit Slovenia and if you like horses, Lipica is the place you want to be. As you can see, it is known for its white horses, so called Lipicanci.

Some info from wikipedia:
The Lipizzan, or Lipizzaner (Slovene Lipicanec), is a breed of horse closely associated with the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, Austria where the finest representatives demonstrate the "high school" movements of classical dressage, including the highly advanced "airs above the ground." The Lipizzan breed dates back to the 16th century, when it was developed with the support of the Habsburg nobility. The breed takes its name from one of the earliest stud farms established, located near the Kras village of Lipica (spelled "Lipizza" in Italian), in modern-day Slovenia.

Aside from the rare solid-colored horse (usually bay or black), all Lipizzans are gray. As with all gray horses, they are born dark—usually bay or black—and become lighter each year as the graying process takes place. Other than the rare individual who does not carry the gray gene, Lipizzans usually gray quickly and develop a completely white hair coat. They are usually completely white by the average age of seven, though the range varies from as young as six to as old as ten.

This is an image of one of the horses. It is a mare (like the most of them; exceptions are young ones). She was so beautiful shining out from dark background with this lovely shadow pattern in front. I hope you'll like it as I do.

Hello Jeri,
What a beautiful shot! The simple, uncluttered composition works really well with the shadow cast by the tree leading the eye to the horse (or vice versa). I think these two elements complement each other very well. The back lighting on the horse is also wonderful against the dark background.
I see that you too had great weather on New Year's Day.
Congratulations on your new camera and hope to see many more pictures like this from it in 2008!

An extraordinary light in this. Letting the lawn and the shadow fill up the frame and having the horse in a very high position was a very good idea. Strong corner position of the horse.

Dear Jeri,
an impressive picture.
like a beautiful illustration in the wonder tale, this is picturesque.
the shadow makes this image so strange that the white horse looks an incarnation of the prince in far kingdom...
and back deep green wood becomes comforatble combination with yellowish green field in quiet backlight.

Živjo Jorgi.

Super fotka. Ok, smo že videli takšne in podobne fotografije, na katerih so se mirno pasli lipicanci, da so v bistvu že majhen kič, ampak tale ma lepo perspektivo, z malo več zelenja v ospredju. Ne predstavljam pa si te fotografije brez konja. Nekako pade notr kot samoumevno glede na kompozicijo. :) Poleg tega super barve.

Zivjo Jeri,

lepo narejeno z Lipicancem izven klasicne pozicije in krasno senco hrasta.

Nisem preprican, samo moje mnenje, ampak morda bi bil lipicanec lahko vecji, slikan od blize. Razen, seveda, ce si hotela poudariti osamljenost.

Hi Jeri,

This is a very nice capture. I like the backlight and the strong shadows. I would crop out the very bottom portion where there is only bright light and no shadow; I feel that it detracts from the overall image. The horse is just gorgeous. And congratulations on your new camera!

Lipica is a fantastic place. I visited it in summer a long time ago. In winter it seams very beautiful to . I like this big shadow.
The light enlightens perfectly the horse.

a good idea title of this shot because it obliges us to flow on the picture to discoverer the white horse: but the real subject is the shadow of tree and the beautiful light.

Tole je ena najlepših slik lipicanke, kar sem jih kdaj videl. Predvsem mi je všeč občutek svobode in prostornosti, ki jo kobila ima samo zase. Upam, da bodo v Lipici konji zmagali v boju proti "družabnim igram".

So, this is probably my favourite of your 'usual' shots, Jeri. I like the composition, the contrast between the white horse all the way up in the frame and those long, long dark shadows falling down.
