Photographer’s Note
‘Piran - Pearl of the Slovenian Mediterranean’
Hereby a view on Piran, Slovenia’s pearl along its short coastline and and more specific on the central Tartini Square (Tartinijev trg in Slovenian or Piazza Tartini in Italian) and the small port.
The picture is taken from the bell tower of the Church of St. George.
The place where the square is located was once a harbour for fishing boats.
Due to bad smell and for health and sanitary reasons the harbour was filled in in 1894. Then Tartini’s Square was built.
On the square we find several remarkable buildings:
- the town hall, a huge, monumental neo-Renaissance white building built between 1877 and 1879 by the architect Giovanni Ribetti (at the right side of the square on this picture, only the roof is visible here but I’ll post a photo of the beautiful façade another time);
- the old court house which has two 17th-century doors;
- the red Venetian House, a charming palace built in the 15th century and the oldest preserved house on the square. The exterior is richly decorated and has a splendid Gothic balcony at the corner;
- Tartini’s house where the famous Venetian composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini was born in 1692.

Hi Paul,
I remember this place from my visit in 1996 if I remember correctly. It is a nice view from your POV indeed. I tried a similar shot but included the hills on the other side of town and a bit of sky. The square got over exposed of is difficult to get right to post on TE.
You got the light right on a not too sunny day I think.
Thanks for sharing,

Beautiful shot of a beautiful town, Paul. The high POV really allows the viewer to take in the enchanting red terra-cotta roofs and picturesque harbor beyond. Moreover, this is a marvelous perspective on the small square and architectural highlights of Piran. Great light, framing, and composition. Well done.

Really a splendid panoramic view of this picturesque town and its harbour. You choose a very good pov which shows very well this charming square. The framing is good focusing the eye to the colourful stage in the middle of the plaza. The red roofs contrasts wonderfully with the blue sea.
I didn't know that Tartini was born here!

A very descriptive photo, properly composed within your frame. I like very much your station point as it gives you a view of almost everything sorrounding the plaza. The narrow opening to the sea reminded me of Vernazza at Cinque Terre, Italy. The atmosphere of the photo with the crowd of people is very festive and alive.
