[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Ptuj is the oldest town in Slovenia and, historically, the most important outside the capital city of Ljubljana.

Ptuj's history dates back to 69 AD when it was first mentioned as a Roman legionary camp on the banks of river Drava. Under the Romans, it acquired the rights of a self-governing civilian entity which served as a staging post between the provinces of Pannonia (present day Hungary) and Noricum. Recognized as a city in 977 AD, Ptuj subsequently fell into the hands of warlord-bishops of Salzburg who benefited immensely from its strategic position on a major trading route. The city evolved around the walls of medieval castle (seen on top of the hill on the photo) and remained under the formal jurisdiction of Salzburg until mid-XV century.

After the death of Frederick XI, Ptuj's status as a major trade center suffered from the constant attacks by the Turks and neighbouring Hungarians - a series of hits from which the city never managed to recover. Nowadays, Ptuj is a small provincial center.

There is a number of people who claim that Ptuj is the prettiest town in Slovenia. Go there and figure out yourselves! Unfortunately, Ptuj is not easy to reach without your own means of transportation.
