Yeah, the flare is unnecessary. This is a travel photograph, it's supposed to convey a sense of being at this location and because the subject is front lit, having the flare doesn't quite work...
I do like the two walking boys and the woman in black makes an interesting focal point. Try not to cut off their feet next time (I know, it's hard; sometimes I forget too!).
