In 2004, the EU saw its biggest enlargement to date when Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia joined the Union. We celebrate in Poland ten years of being the UE member. I had the opportunity of visiting all these countries (except Malta) in a few last years and I find amazing how much progress was done during this time. As a traveller, I appreciate always the freedom we have now to go wherever we want. The progress is not obvious. I visited also some countries that are not in UE - Ukraina with Crimea and Odessa, Georgia, Armenia are independent but still under Russian influence and I can see clearly difference. To go to these countries is for me like a trip back in time, as I remember well how it was in Poland many years ago.
I visited today Devin Castle. The castle stands just inside Slovak territory on the frontier between Slovakia (previously part of Czechoslovakia) and Austria. The border runs from west to east along the Morava River and subsequently the Danube. Prior to 1989, the Iron Curtain between the Eastern Bloc and the West ran just in front of the castle. Although the castle was open to the public, the area surrounding it constituted a restricted military zone, and was heavily fortified with watchtowers and barbed wire. After the Velvet Revolution the area was demilitarised. I have read somewhere that there were people flying with something on the other side of Danube just to go to the West.
How great is to live without Iron Curtain. I just can't believe that there are people who do not want it.
I had today glorious day (and it is not ended yet:))in Bratislava. It is delightful city, the historical monuments are so beautifully restored, the atmosphere is splendid and I was lucky with the weather. I felt very happy. Pity I will have no opportunity to show it. It is a photo taken at random from hundreds. And tomorrow I go to Spain..

Nice capture of Bratislava, a good dedcation to this very special event in the history of Slovakia.
Many interesting notes makes your entry a perfect TE job.

At least today Bratislava looks a lot nicer than Stockholm, where it's raining on and off and is quite cool. I guess I will have to see Slovakia too in the near future. The thought of going to a less visited city than Prague seems quite attractive.
I fully agree that the extension of EU 10 years ago was a great achievement for Europe, not just for those who lived on the eastern side of the Iron curtain. I think we have all benefited from an open continent where we can travel in all directions and get to know each other better, hopefully liberating ourselves from prejudice against "those others".

Tireless traveler, always offering us wonderful pictures, from places as diverse, great view of this beautiful city, with its towers and red roofs in the foreground.
And right now ... in Cordoba ... where you expect 35 degree weather for tomorrow, Sunday, to enjoy this special city ...
Great photo, beautiful natural colors, bright light and excellent clarity.
You enjoy the weekend.

A beautiful city scene, and a fascinating note, I did know it was ten years already that the new members joined the EU! It is reason to celebrate everywhere, as the amount of difference people from these countries made to their chosen destinations has been incredible. Polish is now the second language of Ireland, the only language here with more speakers is English. We have Polish schools, churches, museums, shops and it has done a lot to make Ireland more diverse.
in recent weeks, it has made the news in Ireland that the Polish Embassy released a video celebrating ten years of the people being able to freely come here, its a fun video and a wonderful gesture of solidarity between nations. If you would like to see it :
Have a beautiful weekend.

A nice view of this beautiful city. It seems that has not been invaded by very tall buildings and this certainly makes the city be more enjoyable. I was very happy to read your note about the inclusion in the EU and progress and freedom that this resulted. Thanks for sharing it with us and I have appreciated very much your beautiful travel photos.
My warmest congratulations
God bless you!

Ciao, buona serata e buona domenica

Une note intéressante accompagnant cette photo de Bratislava. J'ai beaucoup de mal à comprendre pourquoi de plus en plus de mes concitoyens contestent cet élargissement de l'Europe!

You offer us a splendid overview over the capital city, with the river on the right helping to create a fine feeling of depth. Pleasant warm lighting and superb colour contrasts. Enjoy your trip to Spain; I often wonder how you manage to maintain the pace and still find time to earn some money:-)

I agree with you that the EU enlargement ten years ago with ten new Members States in many ways has been a great success and it is a good idea to celebrate with a nice photo from one of these countries. I enjoy the high POV where you have a nice view of the city and the photo is very well composed. The lighting is also quite attractive although there are large shaded area. TFS and have a nice Sunday evening!

Nice view over the city of Bratislava here under a impeccable sky. Love the red roofs, they remind me somehow of Tallin in Estonia.
Congratulation to all countries for their 10th anniversary as members of the EU. Even though Switzerland is not a member and the EU has its issues at the moment, I am part of a minority here in Switzerland that are pro Europe. We simply can't stand aside in this great project that has brought peace and prosperity for such a long period in Europe.
have a great sunday

It's interesting to know how a resident of one of the 10 countries which joined the EU in 2004 thinks about it 10 years later. Sometimes we hear other opinions. It's funny how Poland looks so close to us now. Before your country was considered here as a part of East Europe (I know Polish people call it Central Europe) and seemed to be so far away.
You should definitely visit Malta. Small but so beautiful!
This is a splendid view over the red roofs and the church towers of the old town in Bratislava. I'm not sure but did you take the picture from the walls of the castle?
At the other side of the river we see the chimneys of the industrial part of town.
I remember there was also a big part with not really beautiful highrise.
Best regards, Paul

Chyba skusze sie a odwiedzenie w najblizszym czasie

A nice marker to the anniversary, an image that says a lot in conjunction with your notes. Looks to have been a beautiful day, full of sunshine and blue skies which accentuates the rustic red rooftops spread out from this viewpoint. I love your traveling and adventurous spirit, and especially for the fact we get to essentially come along for the ride through you pictures. :) Be well. All the best.

I can say this is very familiar city for me. I do remember this place, although we were here in 2000.
I see you have used a rule of thirds, excellent composition, marvelous colors! I like your interesting report about Slovakia. Thanks for so informative note!
All the best wishes,
