Photographer’s Note

This is the one - the greatest stalagmite of mild climate in the world. 32,6 m tall, 16 m in perimeter, weight app. 2000 tons. It grows at unusual pace - about 150 kgs a year. To have a scale - the middle "story" of this stalagmite is tall as an adult person.
This stalagmite stands in the Krasnohorska jaskyna (cave), in Krasnohorska Dlha Luka village, just about 4 km from Krasnohorske podhradie, a village very well known for the Krasna Horska castle (beautifully captured by Pavel).

The cave is open for public, but the main difference is that there is no illumination and only minimal infrastructure built in the cave. So you wear a speleologic overall and helmet with headlight and only then you are ready ready for a great experience. You climb over wet rocks, balance on narrow wooden walkways over a stream, slip through cracks in the massive and as a bonus, you have to get over a small pool on a steel rope (about 10m).
If you are not terribly clumsy, everything is safe. According to the guides words, in 6 years since opening the cave for public only person had a bath in the pool.

The entrance fee is very reasonable - only app. 10€ (but believe me, the experience is worth any money). But you have to call in advance to reserve your ticket, as there are only few entrances a day with a limited number of people per entrance.

I made many photos here, but with a compact camera capabilities and flash, the results are...not too good.

This shot was taken with support of Gorillapod. Please do not look for any technical quality here, though I did what I could. It´s hard to compose a photo with the camera sitting on muddy ground and on the display you can see nothing but darkness.

More info about this cave, entrances, as well as more photos on the official web site: www.krasnohorskajaskyna.sk.
