Photographer’s Note

On the third image of Košice you can see St. Michael´s chapel and behind it St. Elisabeth´s Cathedral again.
Some facts about St. Michael´s Chapel.
Originaly cemetery chapel (so called "karner") was built as a result of the Košice burgesses' decision approximately in the second half of 14th century on the southern side of the St. Elizabeth's parish church, on the place of the medieval town cemetery. Also the consecration of the Chaple is connected with the other life: Saint Archangel Michail should weigh the soles on the Doom to decide on this test basis, which of the soles can get into the Heaven.

The cemetery chapel had an important function in the Middle Ages not only by the funeral worships or by the the celebrating the Mass for the dead soles. There were the remnants of the bones from the surrounding graves put into the Chaple underground, when the cemetery became full and the new places for the burial were needed to be formed. Also the underground of Košice Chapel has served to the similar purposes. Narrow underground windows, visible in a southern and eastern wall, insured the venting of so called charnelhouse. (From the archives concering the cemetery chaples of other Ugrian towns is known that during the public processions taking place on the All Saint's Day or the All Souls Day, the procession has visited the charnelhouse of the cemetery chapel to pray for the dead souls.)
