Photographer’s Note

Guca is a gypsy music festival, but gypsies are here poor visitors, who cant afford to buy CDs with their music played here, who cant afford roast lamb devoured by crowds of Serbians, proud of their country cultural heritage immortalized by Kusturica movies, but gypsy ways and their ways are really apart.

Guca to festiwal z założenia cygański, ale Cyganie są tu ubogimi gośćmi, którzy zwykle nie mogą pozwolić sobie na kupno płyt z ich muzyką, na jagnięcinę z rusztu. Tłumy Serbów są dumne z muzycznej tradycji ich krajan, znanej na świecie dzięki filmom Kusturicy, ale świat Serbów i Cyganów nie bardzo do siebie pasują.

Cool, bizarre image. Not really sure what the structure they are sitting in is, though. So, the gadjo is the one who is not gypsy, isn't that right? The outsider. Are you saying they are gypsies, but they are also outsiders? Well, it's an intriguing image for its formal characteristics, even if it doesn't really answer these questions (for me, anyway). (Maybe a bit more contrast or sharpening is in order?) -Hugh

Hello, Swiatek--
The piece is nice and the note is a nice start... but i feel like it doesn't take me quite far enough to fully understand the image. As it is, though, i feel like the piece does convey a distance between two parties... not a complete separation as the girl and the men seem to be speaking, but the composition placing the girl in the near foreground with her legs cropped as she looks into the frame towards the men in the spherical object seems to suggest a distance between them, while the hills and old town behind give a feeling of timelessness to the piece, as if this is something that has been happening for a long time. i like the concept and the technical details of the picture, but i just wish i had a better feeling for what exactly is going on.
