Petrovaradin Fortress, old clock tower, one of Novi Sad's major landmarks.

The Clock originates from Alzas (France) and is a gift of queen Maria Teresia at the beginning of the 18th century. The Clock represents special mark of the Fortress, Petrovaradin and Novi Sad.
There are few very intresting stories regarding the clock. Its small hands show minutes and big hands show hours, for that fenomenon there are two reasons.
First one is that the boatsmen were able that way to see time even in worse weather conditions; the other thing is that the clock resounds every hour - that was the main signal for changing of the guard so that minutes were not very important.
When the weather is cold the clock slows, and when it is warm and nice it fasts - that is why its old name is "Drunk Clock".
Interesting thing is also that inhabitants of Petrovaradin were paying "Clock Tax" during the 18th century - the reason for the tax was explained as common good because everyone were using it.
At the top of the Clock Tower is weather vane with compass showing sides of the world and on the top of the masthead is not (as it is common) the spear but the heart.
