Indjija
Municipality is located in Srem region, in the south end of the Fruska Gora, half way between Belgrade and Novi Sad, in the place where two most important European corridors intersect, Coridor 10 (high way E-75) and Corridor 7 (River Danube).
It covers an area of 384 km² and aside from the town itself, the municapality consists of 11 surrounding settlements. The population today is 53 000 people of various nationalities.
Numerous cultural and historical monuments, dating from pre historic period up to now, are a testimony of Indjija’s rich past. Even though the first mention of Indjija dates back to prehistoric period, the first written data about the very settlement of Indjija date from the 15th century. The remains of the Roman Empire fortesses in Stari Slankamen and Cortanovci, medieval castles in Stari Slankamen and monument of the Slankamen battle shows the strategic importance of this area on the Danube River, which throughout the history has always represented a border between different empires.
The Danube River flows through the territory of the municipality in length of 27 km, cutting to the ends of Fruska Gora and creating a magnificent shore line, one of the most beautiful in the flow of the Danube River.
Today, Indjija is one of the most developed municipalities in Serbia. The dominate economy branches are agriculture, industry, small and medium enterprises (production and service craftsmanship) trade and tourism.
