Photographer's Note

Since it is summer, it is the best time to introduce Brewery in Pančevo. Building of old brewery in Pančevo is located at the bank of the Tamiš River.

Many sources claim that it is the oldest brewery on the Balkan Peninsula. It is the oldest industrial factory in town of Pančevo and was founded in 1722. Owner was Abraham Kepiš, of Jewish origin from Požun. Its history follows the history of this area.

In Austrian-Turkish war of 1737 it was heavily damaged but it continued working and even increased production to 3,300 buckets of beer. In the middle of 19 century it was bought by Weifert family. After that, production capacity was increased to 20,000 buckets of beer. Major stakeholder until the end of WWII was Weifert family. At that moment the capacity was 40,000 hecto-litres of beer. However, after WWII was nationalised and continued as People’s brewery. Term “people’s” was common during socialism. It was first industrial company to work in Pančevo after WWII.

Since 1964 it was part of PIK "Tamiš" Kombinat.

It was not possible to further expand production capacity at the old building at Tamiš River, so new building was constructed at Kotež in Pančevo in 1978.
In the beginning of 1990s, new brand was developed called Weifert.

In 2003, brewery was bought by Efes Breweries International N.V from Netherlands.

Old building showed in the photo burned to the ground in 2005.

However, the saddest part is yet to come. New investor decided in 2008 that the brewery is no longer profitable and closed it. After almost 300 years, Pančevo’s brewery ceased to exist.
