Photographer’s Note
One of my first tries with my new SLR. Although a little behind with the calendar, I present you one of the best symbols of the coming of spring- martisor -which is represented by two pieces of string tied together, one white and one red. They symbolize purity and luck, two attributes that would guide the life of the girl who receives the `martisor` all year round. The piece of string is the traditional `martisor`, but nowadays it has become a business, so they added various figurines,like the three ones here. The chimney sweeper and the horseshoe are also signs of good luck and to make sure they`ll be lucky,girls tie them from a peach tree,the first tree to blossom, after they have worn them between 1-8 March.

And I thought that martisor is a tradition in Bulgaria only. It is really amazing that you also have this custom, dated centuries ago. Your photo is of a martisor, tied on a brunch - the tradition is when you see a stork, you put down your martisors and tie them on a tree fot helath and good year. You never through thel away. And sometimes you can see trees with hundreds of tied martisors of different kinds...
