I have used this title before, but it is relevant this time too.
These are Romanian school kids on an excursion to the Transylvanian town of Sighișoara, known among other things as the birth-place of the famous Prince Dracula. Sighișoara is listed by the UNESCO as a world heritage and is no doubt one of the most scenic and interesting towns in the Balkans.

i sometimes use the same title too, but you can't do better when there can be no better fitting title found.
i love this "entrance to history" feeling enhanced by the arch and the candy-like houses waiting to be discovered inside. i fully appreciate those school excursions. there is no better way to make kids love their art and history. we were seldom taken to museums or excursions, as it was a loss of time according to our teachers :)

As with all of your pictures which include people (and that is almost all of them) there is lots going on here. Just as one would imagine in the case of a group of school-children being taken on a learning excursion, some are keen to imbibe some knowledge and others are keener to talk amongst themselves, tell jokes or simply just appear bored. The school teacher, poor thing, just appears somewhat harrassed.
You have captured this group of young students and their female pedagogue perfectly in the mouth of a long narrow and interesting street which leads to a rather attractive pink house in the distance.
Lovely light and colours, perfect exposure and excellent details and sharpness.
In fact, seen on the larger version on "beta" TE, I notice a rather curious "W.C." sign which seems to differentiate between male and female not by general outline (of men in trousers and women in skirts) but rather by shoe type. How strange!

your composition in a vertical frame is wonderful. I like very much how your point of view shows us a deep and interesting view through the arch and over the colourful and restless class waiting for a turn in the toilet. The old architecture, its textures and colours make a fascinating picturesque setting but I really enjoy observing the children who have other things in mind. The little boys that have stayed a little behind remind me of my beloved Sempe' illustrations for Le Petit Nicolas: whenever there's a depiction of the class there are two boys at the back fighting:) Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

Gert, there is definitely something enchanting about this very European scene, an arch leading to a narrow street behind. You would never see this scene in the U.S. The light on the houses in the end of the alley is very pretty, emphasizing the pinks, and it's all balanced nicely by the children in the foreground. Nicely captured.

Those kids on excursion are enthralled by the historic city as is their teachers acting as their guides. A productive summer's day educational outing for sure but they are good subject to capture as shown full of enthusiasm. This image creates a feel and effect achieved in wonderful weather in fresh color tones in some exquisite works. Nicely framed with pleasant clarity and the teacher has the effect of connecting strongly in the frame, the light catching the side of the crowd is lovely filling the detail while the surrounding background and the alley add so much interest. I like those two near the fg on their own business detaching slightly form the rest. A good technique, grab them unaware - nobody seems to notice your lens- to make the picture speaks to viewers. They liven the shot and make this delightful to view. Excellent, Congrats.

Hi Gert, Great POV. Good lighting and excellent composition. The colours are incredible rich and everything is in details. You took this picture with digital Canon camera and you could deliver this kind of quality like it was taken by film camera....how could you do that? Amazing
mirosu (16273) 2013-11-05 21:35
Nice example of street people photography captured with interesting aspects of everyday life, the busy looking place and the view through the arch drawing full attention. The high angle viewpoint is very good and the light & clarity excellent. Well done.
Periko (6086) 2013-11-05 21:47
I see a wide space with some interesting points, as these children in the foreground, discovering the world, and the houses in the background nicely framed by the arch.
Good composition with good light.

you know for a fact that this is my WORST NIGHTMARE!
but they all have something that I don't, having been to this awesome location!
As Canadians, I can almost guarentee you that as a Nation we don't know much about Romania.
Romania isn't exactly on the map for Canadians as a destination of travel.
Maybe its stereotypes, who knows.
If I told my friends and colleagues I was planning a trip to Romania, they'd look at me like I had 3 heads.
But in reality I'm sure Romania is beautiful, rustic, charming, and has plenty of photo opps everywhere.
and yes, I DO plan to visit this country at some point. Its on the list!
You know me, I'm more interested in the architecture down the corridor :)
Fun photo for sure.

interesting shot and place.love the depth in the shot showing the beautiful place and architecture.

Hi Gert, It is so amusing to read Craigs critiques. Craig with three heads, just imagine! But the reaction for my saying that I was beaten by the dog in Romania was similar. You were in Romania?? What for? But I hope that Daniel would not feel offended as we show how interesting and beautiful the country is and is like other Europeans countries. Maybe the roads are even worse than in Poland. And I also agree with John about poor thing - a teacher. (I was a teacher, it was rather horrible, even if my students were older). Nice shot from wonderful Sighisoara, the real gem.
warm regrads MAlgo

Amazing moment, I'd like to get similar excursion in my childhood too. It reminds me the lessons on the streets of Prague and Jerusalem. very nice moment, good presentation of the next generation of Romania.

Barnen står ordentligt uppställda längs en diagonal i bilden. Intressanta byggnade i bakgrunden och en rolig WC-skylt. Står den lille killen till höger och tar kort med sin mobil? Finns bilden på Instagram?

Very interesting considering that most of Europe are living history. Nice capture of those children learning the past generations. Good lighting and sharp details. Well done, tfs.
Romano46 (18472) 2013-11-06 9:54
Ciao e buona serata

namaste Gert, these kids are really enjoying the history... Nice expressions of their faces. Great spontaneous actions. Your composition is fine with nice depth and sharpness. Like the alley which is appearing gradually blur towards back. Excellent shot. Tfs.

I love a foto that provides a great lesson, and this one carries a profound truth that every prospective parent should weigh carefully. In any random group of children, some will be tuned in, some will be tuned out, some will be bored, and some will be looking for mischief! At the end of the next block, the same will be true, but the children could change roles at any time. So, prospective parent, are you ready for one who will tune in, tune out, be bored, and look for mischief? Because that is the truth of children!
Excellent shot, Gert! Thanks for sharing!

The similar composition and idea like your last picture presented from Algeria. This time the plan is close and the street open for our mind. Be sure, Gert, I like it very much!
Graal (103038) 2013-11-08 1:10
unusual place, here lived Dracula. Nice peaceful backstreet, old architecture. Fine composition with the group of school kids on FG. Photo I like.
Have a nice day.
PaulVDV (31147) 2013-11-09 11:03
Seen from this POV and with the gateway under the arch we get the impression that the old town is a walled city.
The ocher facades in the foreground and further up the street the light green, pink and yellow houses provide a very picturesque view.
The group of visiting school children make an attractive foreground.
Isn't the picture taken next to the Vlad Dracul House?
I happened to be in Sighişoara while there was a Medieval Festival held. I arrived the day before and people explained me that there were going to be a lot of concerts in open air. I expected a festival with troubadour music but the next day the streets were taken over by enormous numbers of Romanian hard rockers ... A strange sight in a medieval town :)
Best regards, Paul

Hello dear Gert,
I've missed this wonderfull capture from Mures.
Kids are kids, eveywhere in the World.
Very nice and vivid scenery, full of joy.
TFS and have a nice weekend

Your Photographs tell stories, Gert. This is a remark that I have made more than once... And now, I believe I can pick your photographs correctly from a bunch.
The amazing sharpness & clarity actually play such an important part in the photograph. The footpath has been well captured and the bricks/stone slabs that have been longitudinally laid along the length of the pathway is significant. The depth and colour also enforces the uneven ground of this old path.
The archway acts as a frame through which we look into the past - the old tiled roofs and the pleasantly coloured walls with uneven plaster.
The inquisitiveness of the children with a few of them - as always - breaking away from the group has been an interesting capture.
Didi (60590) 2013-11-10 10:05
Your dominant point of view is good
The group is not masking the view on the old street
kato (11630) 2013-11-12 22:09
You're capturing well this scene by a good angle and excellent tone, so it's interesting and impressive to see the Sighișoara with the sidewalk of a stone pavement, tasteful old houses and young students doing an excursion. It's the best way visiting its place for learning history.
adores (46299) 2013-11-17 15:13
This is the kind of activity the kids usually appreciate a lot because it's a chance to stay away from the classroom! I like to watch their different behaviours. The street looks also very interesting, with this old architecture! A well captured daily scene!
Miguel82 (27648) 2013-11-21 11:10
A teacher with her scholl kids in a cobbled street of Western Romania, they are going to visit monuments in the birth-place of Prince Dracula, the famous vampire
a special atmosphere there for sure. I can see that some students are a little bit boisterous and outside of the group...that happens everywhere and depending of the personality of the children, a brillant picture, all the best, warm regards
mcmtanyel (26896) 2013-11-29 17:32
A very interesting photo that successfully combines people and architecture. I love the uninterrupted view of the houses up the street through the arch.

Trčs belle présentation du groupe d'enfants, la profondeur de la route de pavés bien cadre avec l'arche et l'inclusion de la lanterne
