Photographer's Note

This is the Schei Gate (Poarta Schei), one of the two remaining gates in the medieval walls that partly still surround the centre of Brasov, central Romania. This particular gate was built in 1827, replacing a much older one that had been destroyed by fire.

During the 13th to 17th centuries when Brasov, and most of Transylvania, was ruled by Saxons (German settlers), Romanians were not allowed to live within the city walls. They could only enter at certain times and had to pay a toll to get inside to sell their products.

I will post two workshops, one showing a section of the city wall, the other a glimpse of the old town of Brasov.
