This is a photo of the Piata Victoriei (Victory square) in Timişoara. The building in the centre background is the National Theatre. Piata Victoriei is one of the major squares in the centre of the city.
Timişoara is an old city, first mentioned in 1019. Today it has 336000 inhabitants and a large economic as well as cultural center in Banat in the west of the country. Timişoara is an important university center with the emphasis on subjects like medicine, mechanics and electro-technology.
An industrial city with extensive services, it was the first European city to be lit by electric street lamps in 1884. It was also the second European and the first city in what is now Romania with horse drawn trams in 1867.
On December 16, 1989 townspeople supported Hungarian Calvinist pastor László Tőkés against efforts to deport him by the Securitate, or secret police. On the 17th a popular uprising began in Timişoara against the Communist regime of Nicolae Ceauşescu. This was the beginning of the Romanian Revolution of 1989, which ended the Communist regime a week later.
This photo was taken in October 1995 when I had the chance to visit Timişoara for a conference of Civil Engineering students. It was quite interesting to visit Romania since at that moment it was the only country in Eastern Europe still pretty closed to foreigners, requiring visas and heavy armed guards at the train station at the border.
I would like to know what the square looks like today but I haven't found any photo's so far. Maybe one of our Romanian friends could post one some day.

very nice perspective with the theater building in the background...your image perfectly shows the space available on this square, the buldings aren't that tall and this creates a cosy atmosphere...must be a good spot to sip a morning coffee...cheers, arturo

An interesting look back into recent history.
I traveled quite a bit in Eastern Europe in the early and mid-nineties, although I never made it to Romania. It was an interesting time.
Your composition is well balanced, and I like the inclusion of the Lada/Tatra jeep (or whatever it is) in the foreground.
Good stuff Harko.
