Photographer’s Note

Here's a more unusual view of the Transylvanian city of Deva (Deva/Diemrich/Schlossberg). The city is the seat of Hunedoara district (or county, the Huniad region).

The town became an important military and administrative center during the rule of John Huniad (Hunyad/Hunyadi), the great ruler of Transylvania and regent of Hungary. Although the history of the region stretches back to the Stone Age, the city was first mentioned in documents in 1259. The castle has always been one of the strongest and most important in Transylvania.

The photo was taken from the top of the city cemetery, which lies on the slop of a hill. In the foreground is a bell tower, the only surviving part of a medieval Romanian Orthodox church. In the background, the well known castle ruins, which dominates the skyline of the city.
