... the Transylvanian city of Deva (Deva/Diemrich/Schlossberg)

It is one of my favorite cities, although small in size, with a population of about 70000. It is one of the most well maintained and modern of Romania. It is the seat of Hunedoara (Hunyad) district, a unique region with a rich historic, cultural, etnographic and natural heritage. It also happens to be one of my favorite regions :D

The city became an important military and administrative center during the rule of John Huniad (Hunyad/Hunyadi), the great ruler of Transylvania and regent of Hungary. Although the history of the region stretches back to the Stone Age, the city was first mentioned in documents in 1259.

The name Deva is supposed to have come from the ancient Dacian word "dava" meaning fortress. The Dacian tribes, inhabiting the territory of present-day Romania and its surroundings, named many of their settlements by adding the suffix of "-dava". Another theory traces the name to the Roman Legion "II Augusta", transferred here from Castrum Deva, located in present day Chester, England.
