Photographer’s Note

Polovragi Monastery is located in a picturesque setting at the feet of the Piatra Polovragilor Mountain, in the area of Polovragi village, which actually gave the name to the monastery.
It is located on the road between Targu-Jiu and Ramnicu-Valcea.
It was built in 1505 by Radu and Patru, the sons of Danciu Zamona. It was rebuilt several times.
The monastery complex is in the shape of a fortress at the centre of which is the Curch "Assumption of the Virgin".
The church is built in a byzantine style, the acces inside the fortress being made through a massive wooden carved gate.
This picture represent the infirmary of the church, called Saint Nicholas. It was built in 1732 by The Bishop Clement. The church is in the shape of a ship and it has 2 big rooms.
In the background you can see Oltetului Gorge, where Polovragi Cave is located.
