Photographer's Note

Gathering for Sunday mass at a church in Cluj-Napoca, Transylvania. Outside mosques it's common to give alms to the poor. I am not convinced that the Roma girl met much generosity.

Hello Gert. A beautiful everyday photo from Romania. I'm always surprised about how quickly the Romanians returned after the end of the Soviet Union to the old religion.

An entrance of a church or mosque are very well places for to ask a little bit money, maybe is this Roma girl its specialization!.
Lovely angle with perfect depth and perspective.
I can enjoy of these nice picture, splendid colors and excellent sharpness.

Hi Gert,
Wonderful colour and detail, but I could see form thumbnail,it is not a film image...I imagine that the gold would be more saturated than the digital...
You know I "followed" you to see the world, I also learned something about the word Mosques. I thought that it was a building for Muslims,but I had a look of Wikipedia, it says:" meaning "to bow down in prayer" or "worship"... Keep up your excellent work.:-)

Thanks for this interesting social reporting, Gert. The shot itself is well done - framed between attractive mosaics with good human action and the Roma girl in bright clothing out front drawing the eye, but it is the sad inherent story told here that really makes it worthwhile, of a people locked into poverty and discrimination throughout Europe, but especially in its Eastern half.

You're capturing well this scene by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the entrace of outhodox church with unique saint's paintings on wall and many believers who gather there. It looks like to keep an interesing architecture design.

I like to see the Orthodox churches in different countries. They have various interiors, diverse terms. Althought they are the Orhodoxes. Excellent presentation of the Romanian church, fine details, good colors.

En bra komposition vari du har kombinerat den vackra byggnaden med ett levande folkliv, som bidrar med många färger. Ser man bara linjerna från trappan tillsammans med valven ovanför och väggmålningarna, så hade ju bilden varit bra även utan människor.

I sure this one will please Daniel (dkmurphys) a lot, him beeing from Cluj.
Great capture of a daily life scene, the girl looks just so bored as young people are in this kind of situations, while the worshippers go to church. She even stands out with her colorful clothes as well.

Hello Gert,
a very well composed vertical frame that follows carefully the lines and rhythm of the architecture. The many people in different postures and positions make the scene very interesting. The connection between the people and the setting is great, they provide superb and intriguing reference to each other. It's great to see the interaction among the people and read their thoughts in their expressions. Jesus and St Nicolas seem to be watching the scene too. Congratulations and thank you!

Interesting street photography, a very poignant shot with some atrractive colors and subjects of interest; the church goers entering the highly decorative orthodox church . Needless to say, the presence of the none too happy Roma girl certainly draws the eyes in, the odd one in her stunning yellow and blue, attracting much attention as the main focus and she's obviously eyed someone but her expression really says it all. Her image provides a powerful statement whilst she is being ignored by those who have already passed. She has a certain look about her which belies her desperate situation and to her is just routine. It's a sad commentary on our world, a photo doc on how the unfortunate interacting with people around her. A meaningful compostion of a commanding street shot, a very thought-provoking picture that tells a great story and there is great strength and humanity. Fine work, Congrats

Romania is high on my list of countries to visit.....theres something about traveling to
Less popular destinations that really appeal to me. I thought that young girl seemed out of place....reading yr note pretty much confirmed that. A true portrayal of daily life....really enjoyed this one. Enjoy your day

Hello dear Gert,
Nice capture of this church entrance in Cluj.
I allways wondered why the churches in Romania ara much more decorated with ferscoes, mosaic panels etc on otside walls, compared to other churches as well ?
Maybe a kind of eclesiastic bill boards, who knows.
The Roma girl is typical throughout Romania.

The mosaics on the outer walls are fascinating. You captured a nice slice of daily life with people entering the church. Alms & beggars I guess go hand in hand with any Religious place...the levels vary!
