Monastery in the city of Curtea de Arges. The Episcopal Church founded by Neagoe Basarab, prince of Wallachia (1512-1521) was built from 1512 to 1517. The Arges Monastery was inaugurated on the 15th of August 1517 with big pomp and important guests. Besides the Romanian guests, at its inauguration came the Constantinopol’s Patriarch himself. The church was restored during the reigns of Matei Basarab (1632-1654) and Serban Cantacuzino (1678-1688). The church is laid on a wide horizontal stone pavement. The eternal walls are divided in two superposed sections, separated by a stone-carved twisted belt, which encircles the church. On top, there is a succession of semi-circular niches ended, in the middle of which there are decorative panels and rosette disks. At the Arges Monastery there are the royal graves of Romania’s kings: Carol the 1st (1886-1914) and his Queen Elisabeth, also known as Carmen Silva – her artistic name, Ferdinand the 1st (1914-1927) and his Queen Maria and starting from February 2003 also the grave of King Carol the 2nd (1930-1940).
