The Transfăgărășan (trans (over, across) + Făgăraș) or DN7C is the second-highest paved road in Romania, and considered by some to be the most dramatic. Built as a strategic military route, the 90 km of twists and turns run north to south across the tallest sections of the Southern Carpathians, between the highest peak in the country, Moldoveanu, and the second highest, Negoiu. The road connects the historic regions of Transylvania and Wallachia, and the cities of Sibiu and Pitești.
The road was constructed between 1970 and 1974, during the rule of Nicolae Ceaușescu. It came as a response to the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Union. Ceaușescu wanted to ensure quick military access across the mountains in the event the Soviets attempted a similar move into Romania. Consequently, the road was built mainly with military forces, at a high cost both financially and from a human standpoint—roughly 6 million kilograms of dynamite were used on the northern face, and the official records mention that about 40 soldiers lost their lives in building accidents.

Une magnifique vue sur cette route de montagne.
Le POV est bien choisi, bons contrastes et bonne profondeur.

what a spectacular and beautiful landscape!
I must say this curved road is a superb addition to the graphical layout of the image.

I always wanted to drive this road! One day... :)
Picturesque backdrop combined with the hairpin bend in the foreground create a strong sense of place.
Have a nice weekend.

The meandering road draws us inexorably into the rugged landscape set out before us. I like very much the light and shadow contrasts and the pleasing natural colours.

never realised how mountainous your country is, this could be in Switzerland, looks wonderful and a superb capture of the winding road. Looks amazing and beautiful.
Have a good weekend - B.

Le regard suit naturellement la route sinueuse dans l'image, ce qui lui donne une formidable profondeur. Il faut dire que les montagnes sont superbes en arrière plan.

I'm sure at times this is a harrowing and frightening road to travel on, Daniel, but it makes for a wonderful photograph as it winds down through the valley. This shot fades into mist beautifully in BG, and the road creates a nice sight line. Thanks!

The twisting road takes the eye deep into this image and I like the roughly diagonal bisection the grassy slope makes across the screen. The yellow green colors of the grass also contrast superbly against the bg smoky blue grey mountains. A nice view of the valley far below. Have a nice weekend!

An impressive landscape view and a picture that is beautifully divided into blue and green parts. The view makes me think of Trollstigen in Norway, the similar kind of road. This is a very fine and interesting picture.

Judging from the curving road this would be an interesting area to travel. The scenery is magnificent and i like the gradually changing colours from the bright green foreground to the hazy dark blue background.

Kamilutka (8107) 2014-04-05 5:55
well taken picture! The serpent like road which cuts through the mountains has been placed very well in the frame and adds important point of interest to the composition. I like very much the colors in here: the lush green in the foreground changing into more bluish tones further in the distance.
Thanks for sharing

Hello Daniel - The road beckons and what a wonderful journey it would be to pass through the dramatic and beautiful landscape.

Oricum, bine realizat.

Very informative note. Expensive price for this road, but the politics have got only their interests and a human lives are just statistics for them.
The photo is great! It reminds me a lot of another mountain regions, but I really like this view! Fine DoF, nice vivid summer colors.
Best wishes from LA!

these long twisting roads are so cool.
even better during blue hour to get some more colors in there.
sad but true history about the men dying to complete the job...but thats the way it goes i guess.

a wonderful area, presented under very interesting light. A wide, downward point of view with sweeping depth. Your composition is harmonious and inviting, travelling through this vast setting must be marvelous. I like very much how the viewer feels surrounded by these fine, natural textures and graduating colours. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
