Photographer’s Note

St. Michael's Roman-Catholic cathedral of Alba Iulia (Latin: Apulum, Hungarian: Gyulafehérvár, German: Weißenburg/Karlsburg).

The cathedral was founded in the early 11th century by the first king of Hungary, St. Steven. The current structure was built in the early 13th century by Hungarian king St. Ladislaus, being refurbished and added to in later times.

The Roman-Catholic Archdiocese of Alba Iulia was established as the Diocese of Transylvania in 1009 and as the Diocese of Alba Iulia on 22 March 1932, before being raised to the status of Archdiocese by Pope John Paul II on 5 August 1991.

This year, in 2009, the diocese celebrates 1000 years of existence.
