Photographer’s Note

Be present, faithful ones. A handful of people were attending the Mass inside the St. Michael's Roman-Catholic cathedral of Alba Iulia (Latin: Apulum, German: Karlsburg/Weißenburg, Hungarian: Gyulafehérvár).

The cathedral was founded in the early 11th century by the first king of Hungary, St. Steven the Great. The current building dates from the early 13th century, being refurbished and added to at later times. It is a unique and precious architectural monument, the most important in Transylvania, its architecture displaying a mixture of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles.

The Roman-Catholic Archdiocese of Alba Iulia, Romania, was established as the Diocese of Transylvania in 1009 and as the Diocese of Alba Iulia on 22 March 1932, before being raised to the status of Archdiocese by Pope John Paul II on 5 August 1991.
