Photographer’s Note
This is a traditional religious food prepared in Romania for the Martyr's Day (March 9th). This is why I labeled it as coming from Romania, although Daniela prepared the ones you see in the photo here in the US. There are two traditional recipes: the Moldavian one (shown in the photo) is a bagel-like product shaped as the number 8, soaked in sugar syrup and sprinkled with finely chopped walnuts, while the Wallachian version (pictured here) is a sugar-sweetened soup with tear-shaped baked pieces about the size of Cheerios and sprinkled with cinnamon and ground walnuts.
