Japanese Minimalism on the Black Sea
The magnificent cruise ship the Crystal Serenity was in the Black Sea on a cruise that had commenced in Venice and meandered through the Aegean. Then it had entered the Black Sea through the two Turkish Straits, the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus, and visited Nesebur in Bulgaria; Yalta, Sevastopol and Odessa in the Ukraine; with its passengers finally disembarking in Istanbul. We were in International waters just off the coast of Romania when I shot this photo. I had been serving as a lecturer on board the Serenity as the ship visited some of the magical ports of the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
It was late in the afternoon, and the ship was bound for Istanbul. The reflection of the sun on the still sea, continued onto the glass table in the Panorama Lounge where a bud vase presented a silhouette, a veritable Japanese Minimalist painting.
I apologize for streaks appearing in the window. They are rarely seen in such a pristine ship, but the angle of the sun amplified them in this scene. They are a residue from the washing fluid that is periodically released to clean the windows.
The Serenity (and its sister ship, the Symphony) are ranked as the top cruise ships in the world. The Crystal Cruise Lines is owned by the Japanese Firm NYK, although it is based in Los Angeles. Dedicated to my friends in Romania and Bulgaria.

Dear Bulent Bey,
Again a handsome note. The silhouette of the flower looks like a palm tree under a Floridan sun.

Hello Professor Atalay,
I thank you for your very generous critiques. I am deeply touched.
Indeed the silhouette of this simple flower arrangement reminds me of Japanese Sumi paintings. From the arrangement of the exposure of this photo, I assume that you already had a exact finished image in your mind. How appropriate that the name of the ship is Serenity, The image that you have arranged here represents precisely the meaning of this word. The reflection of the sun seems to join the calm ocean surface right to the base of the beautifully arranged Vase of these flowers. You are one of the very few persons who possess both logical side and the emotional side of human nature at the same time. It is extremely rare to find such delicate yet logical mind. The presented image is truly delicate and elegant one, with my at most compliments.
Very best regards,
I wish you a great weekend.

It is a minimalist but effective composition. I do like to do the unconventional such as shooting against the sun. Very nice capture with good dof. Well done, tfs.

I guess you're about to start your trip, so if you have not already begun. Hope you enjoy so much!
The image is certainly singular, too bad the windows of the ship were not sharper.

Ciao dear Bulent,
among your many features, surely there is a great sense of observation, typical of men of science. If we add to your sense of observation, your artistic sense, the result you can see it in this beautiful and suggestive image, captured in the most beautiful ship that I have seen (thanks for the unforgettable visit on the occasion of our meeting). Superb photographic work, dear friend, sincere congratulations!
Ciao, have a nice day!

Dear Professor 'A'
A well captured 'idea'..The streaks in the window & the reflections thereof on the glass table, may have to some extent affected the final product of the Sumi painting effect, but its your photographic eye coupled with your vast knowledge which allowed this idea to be translated into this picture.
With Warm Regards & eagerly looking fwd for your European pictures

Hi Bulent, I like your creativity in this simple yet effective image. The window adds the extra touch of the reflection onto what appear the reflection off the glass table.. The sharpness and detail of the flower and vase makes the image balance between the the light and reflections.. very creative.. Hope you are having a wonderful holiday.. Rich

Cette prise est très agréable et très bien faite. J'aime la sobre élégance des lignes et des reflets qui passent de la mer à la table.

Merhaba Bulent Bey. Nice to see a more experimental effort from you that has a touch of the poetic to it. What a world we live in! A Turkish physicist living in America sailing in a Japanese ship off the coast of Romania, taking a photo under the spell of Japanese art and later posting it on TE where it was seen by many, including myself, an Australian of Croat/Albanian ancestry who is communicating with the said photographer in English, the lingua franca of the modern world. Have a lovely weekend. Klaudio.

Optical effects have given a really interesting and highly aesthetic result in this simple but quite elegant composition. Excellent idea, which was realized perfectly well!

The perfection of this image is such that one feels one is dreaming.
The elements that contribute to that effect are, the balance of the light on the water and its reflection, the silvery tones and the soft, hazy blues, the repetition of the circle shape in both the base of the vase and the table edge, the way the light just catches the tip of the leaves, the perfect placement of everything. The streaky window only adds to the dreamy effect.
Additionally, the cloud reflection in the table top pulls the blues and
milky whites into the FG and the total blackness in the right corner balances the dark leaves.
In all this perfection there is still a mystery here, I feel like I am the darkness in the corner and all the color is the dream I am dreaming.
I love this silhouette.
Many thanks for setting my mind to wander and to wonder.

Zerafetin, şıklığın ve estetiğin fotoğrafı bu olsa gerek.
