Photographer’s Note

This guy is probably the most popular guy in his area, everyone queues to get a shot of Ginjinha, a cheap cherry brandy they serve in a plastic cup for 1,1€.
You get your fill from "holes in the wall" type of bars in Lisboa, no more than 4 people can be standing into the place. The alcohol of the poor guys.

Out on the street, the angolese drugdealers on Rossio, the junkies, the winos, the decayed intellectuals and lots of tourists like me rub their shoulders in the cool evening wind.

Ginjinha gives you courage before climbing Lisboa hills.

Not that I'm here so often these days but hey what a great find to see this image and a really nice story to go with it - excellent sharpness (at this size and I guess larger too) at 1/25th - steady steady hands - is it me or does the colour look a little more like the 'natural' output of a Nikon rather than the 5D .......any way such a well caught naturalistic moment Luko I really like the central placing of the main figure and the way in which his tiny working environment contains him on all sides - we have a real customers eye view .....and I'm convinced I should now go and pour myself a fine whisky as a night cap!

I do not go to Lisbon without making a stop there. And, I do not leave Lisbon without making sure I have in my check-in luggage a bottle of Ginjinha bought in Óbidos!
Your picture is superb, as usual. The man has a happy expression, pouring the delicious liquor and at the same time staging for the camera.

j'aime beaucoup cette scène de rue, enfin de bar...le grand angle, les couleurs, l'attitude du barman et l'absence de bruit (enfin il me semble) à 1000 ISO..ça doit être le 5D...mon K10 lui patine dès 400 ISO. Bref, comme dit Kevin, it's a real customers eye view...on s'y croirait.

Top notch environmental portrait with a rather welcome distortion at such wide angle. It could count as an action shot. I wonder why your exif data has 17 mm as a focal length... The white balance seems a bit off on my screen, with a slightly unnatural color cast on the bartender's face. As Kev noticed, remarkable steady at 1/25. The bottles and the registry create an awesome backdrop but I wish the lady was one short step forward, or maybe backward. Always nice to read your notes.

Well I must say that cheap cherry liqueur sure looks pokey.. no doubt it would warm the body up! It is like he is pouring it knowing it has a devastating effect, with the woman in the background laughing as if to say "this will get you!". Great shot - and thanks for sharing. Casper

Excellent shot, you managed to capture the unique atmosphere of this place here, I love the wide angle lens distortion - I think it works very well, excellent sharpness for 1/25 sec, good exposure and colours, very nicely composed and I like your note too, very nice work!

I get the impression there was probably some nasty fluorescent strip light not far above his head - yet the colours still appear so very natural. Like Kev I like the way the guy dominates the shot surrounded by all the other paraphernalia.

A real treat for the eyes Luko.

A splendid shot Luko, great focus on the arm here which seems to abnormally large. Great colour scheme throughout the shot providing a nice little den type feeling...you give us a nice welcome feel to the bar.

Pas mal cette baraque à cherry, où malgré un éclairage de fortune, tu as atteint un résultat remarquable.L'effet du grand angle convient parfaitement à cette scène, où l'on peut s'y sentir soi-même emmuré. Sujet original et bien présenté.

L: you're back - ah, yes, from the recesses of PH... Of course, the only drawback is the lady in the background - but the plethora on environmental detail and caught action more than compensate. It's a fine image - especially the slightly warm temperature of the shot. Perhaps you adjusted it in Camera RAW - the result works. regards, c

I really love the way the sense of dimension works thought this .. the hyper feeling of length in his arms .. the compressed feeling behind ..

Neat balance between the vertical stacks of ciggarettes and rows of bottles ..

Meaningful sense of the timelessness of what he is doing .. the old walls .. versus the computer behind him .. very nice. take care, John

Good shot and interesting story! So, when in Lisboa one's got to taste ginjinha :) You recommend? I guess it's similar to "Visnjevaca" it's cherry brandy that women make here in Serbia, it's like domestic drink, don't know if you can buy it somewhere, but it's too strong for me...

Wonderful Luko! Love your editing work here. The colors and the contrast work suits very well the subject. And the wide angle too. It's a crime to serve Ginginha in this plastic cups (glass would be more appropriate) but I guess globalization is the thing to blame... Love that red shirt. Very good.

Hi Luko, apparently you've caught the real spirit of Lisbon if you have taken this shot. That's one of the very modest but at the same time greatest marks of the Rossio area. You captured very well the interior atmosphere of this small shop with good use of light. The tones of the colours are different than usual but go quite well with this ambiance. Regards, Tolga

17mm, ça rend pas mal l'illusion d'être un peu bourré. Des couleurs un peu glauques de fin de soirées dans un quartier où on sait qu'on ne devrait pas être, mais bon... on est bourré après-tout... D'ailleurs ces cerises ressemblent beaucoup à des yeux!
J'aime bien l'alignement parfait des bouteilles etc. en arrière plan. Même la main de la dame semble souligner la perfection des rangements.

Salut Luko,

Les couleurs sont riches, tous les pixels bien plein de couleurs. Je sais pas si tu joue de la musique, mais parfois on dit en parlant d'un excellent instrument de musique (surtout à corde), que les notes qui en sortent sont rondes, ou pleines. Ben ici (et dans toutes tes photos en couleurs-Yanseiler a aussi un peu le même effet), c'est un peu la même chose, mais visuellement.

Le grand angle donne l'impression que l'homme possède un bras de 2 mètres, ce qui est bien car ça donne de l'emphase sur le mouvement qu'il est en train d'effectuer.

J'adore tous les fins détails:cerises dans le fond, les bouteilles alignées, les packs de clopes, le calendrier. Ça fait vraiment petit comptoir du coin de la rue et ça donne l'impression à celui qui regarde d'avoir voyagé...d'être là.

Par chance, il y a un mur clair et une caissière à la garde-robe claire aussi qui permettent à l'homme de bien ressortir. J'adore le métal brossé qui réflète bien la lumière dure qui vient de directement en haut et qui permet de bien éclairer la scène (et qui donne une belle ombre précise)

finalement, j'aime que cette scène aurait pu avoir été prise à presque n'importe quel moment de la 2e moitié du XXe siècle (nonobstant l'ordinateur et la souris).

Alors, ça a marché le remontant? et c'est bon?

I have been to Lisboa too....i like a lot this town...
Very good use of the wide lens and the red is really eye-catching
unfortunately i don't like alcohol...so ...really hard "to climbing" Lisboa Hills for me...... :)

C'est dans ce genre de photo que je te prefere.

j'aime cette proximite, et l'atmosphere qui se degage ici. il se passe quelqe chose, et on est dans l'action. Pas juste spectateur. Je peux presque entendre pouffer la caissiere et brailler les alcoloos dans la rue. J 'en salive de cette ginjinha!
Et puis j'aime bien le decor. La composition bien horizontale incluant une bonne partie du comptoir...et bien ca donne l'impression d'y etre accoude. J'adore le cote brillant et lisse de celui-ci d'ailleur.
enfin, mention speciale pour la tonalite verte (je crois que cette couleur t'est chere) de la lumiere sur la peau et le murs.

Je n'ai rien d'intelligent à dire, seulement que j'aime beaucoup cette photo et l'ambiance dans laquelle elle nous plonge, et je trouve admirable la manière dont les acteurs de la photo t'acceptent lorsque tu appuies sur le déclencheur... je sens que ce n'est pas une photo volée. La note est bonne aussi ;)

j'ai l'impression que c'est moi qui vais déguster le verre dans qualques secondes
effectivement une très belle qualité d'image sans bruit, chose impossible avec mes moyens
je note la bonne netteté malgré une vitesse à 1/25!

Une photo qui nous propulse dans cet espace encaissé, qui nous met très exactement à la place du client qui attend, derrière le comptoir, la gorgée de cherry. Une photo qui fait qu'on y est un peu, qui ballade le regard du geste au visage de l'homme, des bouteilles aux cigarettes. Une photo pleine de cette vie de l'anodin, que j'aurais bien aimé faire.

j'ai lu tes conceptions du site, de l'échange (souvent de bons ou mauvais procédés !) et je les respecte même si je ne les partage pas toujours !
nous ne pratiquons pas dans le même registre. Mais j'ai eu énormément de plaisir à parcourir ta galerie. tes scenes de vie sont bourrées de spontanéité, de vie, de couleurs, d'angles, de lumières.

Hey, this place looks familiar...I've been there many times, mostly when I was a student.
A very pitoresque place, very well portraited. I'm not quite fond of that green cast but...

Nobody can really enjoy ginginha in a plastic cup, that's for sure.

Long time ago, that place was a meeting poit of black people, many of them ex-slaves. They offered their work in exchange of a miserable fee. The costume remained until these days...

Natural and casual scene in slightly desat tones, good POV. I kinda remember these type of places (Alfama ??), but with some bitterness (got my backpack stolen in that neighborhood ..)

Spectacular shot, buddy. Really plunges right into one of these little places that are so much fun in the eraly evening (that Vinho Verde on tap ain't bad either...) Were you struggling with some of the highlights there, or was that a function of increased contrast?
The whole thing has almost an HDR feel to it even though I know that's not your thing, perhaps hyperrealism or painting might be a better definition.
Anyway, cool.
