This is the Igreja Paroquial de Nossa Senhora da Graça (Parish Church of Our Lady of Grace), in Corroios, Portugal.
There was here a church since some five centuries ago. The earthquake of 1755 destroyed that first church. It was restored; but in the next century the parish was extinguished and the church became ruins again. By the middle of the 20th century this church was reestablished and restored again.
This is a typical parish church of a village in Southern Portugal. Its size was according to the population of the Corroios village of that time. Now Corroios is just a part of the big urban area around Lisbon, full of apartment blocks; it has much more population. But, by the other hand, nowadays much less people attend the church services, therefore the small church is enough for a bigger population. This is also a hint how the Catholic Church attendance dwindled.
See in the workshop how the small village became a large city.
In another workshop I made a fake postage stamp, just for fun.

Boa tarde Francisco!
Thank you for sharing this testimony of the religious history of Portugal! True! The richer the people, the less religious they seem to become! Probably they become more attached to worldly goods than to spiritual cares. But on the other hand, I think it was easier for the Church to keep its power on people when they were poor uneducated villagers.
Anyway, enough of philosophical diatribes! Your photo looks very nice . I like the colours and the sharpness.
Your composition also proves your note to be right, with the old houses on the left and the new housing estates on the right.
Cumprimientos.
MarieLouise.

Ola Francisco,
I love the interesting shapes of the church against the perfect sky. I probably would have cropped the building on the left, but my first thought was that it was well-framed so perhaps it would look worse cropped. Interesting note & WS.
SAA, Pat

Bonsoir Francisco,

I do not Know Corroios village in the other side of the river. The picture shows me its church and a little of the village. Have you stayed there for a long time. Did you work at this area? Greetings. Domingos

MCV
