[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The calendar is finally complete.
In January I set myself a challenge of producing 12 shots of "different" landscapes. I tried to get rid of some clichés and decided to break some rules. No more the usual foreground rocks, vertical compos, or false sense of infinite depth. I tried to make 12 centered horizons photos. But in order for that to work, I would have to be able to mirror the lower (earthy) and the upper (sky) parts in terms of importance, while anchoring the shot with some kind of natural subject. Not an easy task at all... I guess my lucky results were March, July and November where both sky and foreground seemed to melt in one; or January and August where I was able to mark a reflected giant diagonal from bottom right to the left top corner. The others were a mix of so so shots with happy moments.
I guess I can go back now to normal landscape shots. Rules are great to be broken once in a while, but if they are follow in a creative way they really can produce fantastic results.
Hope you liked this voyage with me. See you next year! ;)

Hi Luis,

A beautiful exemple of centered subject... Good balance and beautiful colors in the background ! And a nice contrast between the water and the sand... It's great :-)

Regards,
Stéphanie.

Hi Luis,
Don't think about the rules, just do your own thing. Sometimes we see landscapes that need a center horizon, who cares. You are landscaper (and seascaper) enough to know what a picture needs. If that ends up in a center hirizon, so be it. Don't worry to much about that, just making and uploading these wonderful pictures from you and don't think to technical ;-)
Was a pleasure to see this year calendar, hoping to see the same quality the coming year as you produced here with the warm nice red glow. The sky almost looks unreal, wonderful scenery..
Take care my friend and enjoy the turning of the year.
Regards, Henk

Very well timed light in this. I like the diagonal of the small boulders in the lower left, they give a nice lead into the picture.

Hello Luis,

Another great capture from your portfolio. I like its dominant pink/red tones with rocks and beautiful effect of your long exposure. Reflections on wet sand are very nice.

I wish Happy New Year to you and your family.

Regards,

Ertugrul

Hi Luis,

I think that in your previous life, you were a shell or a sea turtle...

Why should we be sooooo afraid of centered horizons? Why should we have to excuse ourselves for centered composition? You, Luis, the self-assured street shooter, the guy who almost put your lenses on the nose of people, how can you be so doubtful? Okay, let me decide for you what should be your next year resolution; No more doubt, no more sorry, no more "I don't knows".... You and a couple of members here are my inspiration, I'm the one who have to learn through your experience, I'm the one who's always wonder if what I'm doing is correct; so what if my mentors are in doubt? No future!!!

When you achieve such a quality image, how could you be hesitant? When I see this stuff, I would rather delete most of my gallery... Tsss!!!

I really like you Luis; you're a true artist, doubtful and self critic...

Did you get your new biometric card? Portuguese are wise and techno savvy...

Cheers!

André

Sure all is good here: colors, sharpness, exposure... What I would suggest would be to remove the rocks that are half-cropped on the left in order to only keep the "main" rock is a central position, with central horizon (is it not one of your future goal?). So it boils down to to just walk a bit to the left and trigger the shutter again.

I love this composition very much: it will serve your calendar well! The rock shapes, the swirling waters in front of the rock and the dramatic sky all really impress me.

Ola Luis,
A final one in the series to complete your beautiful almost beachscapes calendar, nice to see now the 12 side by side in the theme. This one is equally nice with soft dramatic light and that foreground boost thanks to the ND.
My best wishes to you for the new year !
Jean-Yves

Luis,
a true delight to go through this collection of landscape that culminates in a selection of 12 - a calendar. I agree with you that rules have to be broken and you did it quite remarkably well, although I disagree with you regarding not using foreground rocks. You actually used important foreground elements in the present shot as well as in the images of March, April, May, July, August and September. That makes more than 50% of your calendar shots. :-)
Curious to see what you will present us this year!
Cheers, Peter

this landscapes that you present make me dream
fantastic view
BEST WISHES FOR 2008 dear Luis
regards,anes
