Palácio da Regaleira I Photo

Photographer’s Note

I was not sure about the Masonic origins of the mansion of my last post from the Dominican Republic when I posted it, but now that such fact is confirmed, I thought that was a good pretext to show you this mysterious palace that is full of enigmatic symbols (* see note below).

The palace, known as Palácio (or Quinta) da Regaleira, was built in the late 19th century, but there were already older constructions on the site at that time. His owner, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, was one of those 19th century figures who liked to spend much of their large wealth in various things like Science and Art in general, Architecture in particular and also in esoteric things like Alchemy, Masonry, Templar Knights and Rosicrucianism. He inherited a huge family fortune that he expanded in Brazil, where he was born, selling coffee and precious stones (he was known in the press of the time as "Monteiro of the Millions"). He hired the Italian architect Luigi Manini to build this palace, which is an intricated mix of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Manueline (a kind of Portuguese late Gothic) styles.

It is located on a hill near the centre of the charming historic town of Sintra, which is classified by Unesco as World Heritage, only a few Kms West of Lisboa. From its windows and balconies one has fabulous views over the neighbouring densely forested hills of Serra de Sintra, which features a Moorish castle just beside a Romantic palace and also the Atlantic coast that lies just a few Kms to the West, to the left of this photo (the haze doesn't allow its sight).

The palace was used for shooting some scenes of the 1999 Roman Polanski's film "The Ninth Gate", which featured famous actors like Johny Depp, Lena Olin and Emmanuelle Seigner. Not surprisingly it is a mystery film.

* Update 10-Oct-2007: Initially I titled this post "Another Masonic building" and I wrote that it was full of Masonic symbols. I did this because I have always heard about the the abundance of Masonic symbols in the place and it is quite quite common to hear it mentioned in discussions related to Masonry and other esoteric movements. Then ribeiroantonio pointed that not everybody agrees that the enigmatic design and decorations of the building are related with Masonry and that the place was actually used to any esoteric ceremony or initiation rituals.

Uma foto muito bem tratada, nota-se, com uma nota igualmente bem detalhada. Para consgeuir tanta definição com uma ajuste f/stop-exposition time, provavelmente você usou tripé, não? O ponto de tomada está também bom, apesar de você ter subtraido algumas partes do elemento principal.

Essa arquitetura é muito interessante mesmo, e na hora que vi a foto lembrei desse filme, O Último Portal de Roman Pollanski antes mesmo de ler a nota, acho que por causa desses bichos que me chamaram a atenção! Muito boa foto e a nota perfeita!

Também me lembrou o filme dos caça-fantasmas, com algumas criaturas no topo de um edifício bem alto! O ângulo valorizou muito essa composição!

Referes a Regaleira como sendo outro edifício masónico. Pois eu não conheço a Quinta da Regaleira como sendo um espaço macónico. Existem várias referências sim, mas creio que sem grande fundamento.

Neste sítio, dedicado à Quinta da Regaleira, a historiadora Denise Pereira da Silva diz a certo momento: Se alguns autores crêem na existência de um percurso iniciático, porventura maçónico-templário com referências rosa-crucianas e alquímicas (uma vez que alguns elementos decorativos poderão remeter para essas correntes filosóficas), na realidade nunca foram encontradas evidências da utilização ritual dos espaços, desconhecendo-se ainda eventuais filiações do “Monteiro dos Milhões”..

Por associação familiar com a referida historiadora (que por acaso é prima direita da minha mulher), eu já fiz uma visita guiada muito detalhada ao referido palácio e não vi símbolo macónico algum.

Mas para falar da tua foto, está lindíssima e o POV foi muito bem pensado. Pela sua situação, este palácio não é nada fácil de ser fotografado mas tu aqui conseguiste uma linda imagem. Gosto também muito daquela vista lá atrás. Dá um ideia excelente do que se pode ver a partir do palácio.

Obrigada por mostrares a foto das estatuas que acho lindas.
A definicao nesta foto esta otima. Gosoto imenso dos cinzentos contra o fundo azul. O Ponto de visata e muito bom. A unica coisa que na minha opiniao podia melhorar esta foto que esta excelente, era um pouco mais de ceu na borda de cima. A pontinha do cataventos pareceme interromper o ceu, mas isto e coisa minima.

Interesting POV and close up of the masonic building with its architectural details well presented. Colors and sharpness are good quality but I only wish we could see the top of the spire.
The garden in WS looks very exotic...

superb linked note about the capture and parts of the background history of the Masonics. The view on the walls is well done, the closer workshop is my personal favourite. Also the garden one is appealing. Textures and details are good visible.

J'aime beaucoup les tons sur cette photo avec les differentes couleurs de pierre et les ocres presques rouges. Le point de vue est excellent en nous montrant toutes ces petites tourelles et statues. Architecture vraiment tres interessante.

Uma pena a foto ter cortado algumas partes do castelo, mas compreendo que deve ser bastante difícil encontrar um POV abrangente.
O todo e os detalhes são mesmo enigmáticos, mas não vejo sinais de maçonaria evidentes.
Gostei muito dos jardins, no WS-2 e, para não perder o costume, já vou dizendo que valeria um post independente.
Cá estou eu sem chapéu, para te felicitar pelo trabalho insano de colocar todos aqueles links.

Tenho andado com pouco tempo para ler todas as críticas e discussões, como gostava de fazer antes. Mas a crítica tão grande e destacada do António levou-me a ler.
Também não tenho conhecimentos na matéria, mas creio que posso realçar um par de aspectos. Primeiro acho que por vezes (não digo que seja o caso) se confunde ou mistura coisas esotéricas com maçonaria. Por outro lado, a própria maçonaria é (ou é vista ou apresentada como) algo misterioso. Não sei quem está certo neste caso deste palácio, mas penso que podem acontecer duas coisas separadas, que eventualmente nunca se juntaram aqui: 1. o edifício ter símbolos maçónicos (e até o dono ou arquitecto ser maçon); 2. o edifício nunca ter sido usado oficialmente para actividades da Maçonaria.
Bom, a foto em si está bonita. Também gosto muito de ver melhor os detalhes no WS#1. O WS#2 também é bonito, mas um bocado confuso com tanta vegetação.

This is a wonderful POV you chose and I do prefer this to the closer view in the WS. I like the garden too. What intrigues me are the animal sculptures that look like something from a nursery story. In fact all the detailing is very intricate. I don't think I have seen a note with so many links! It must have taken you ages. Good work

Bonita imagem, eu pessoalmente tenho 1 quase idêntica mas nunca a coloquei (penso que a luminosidade da tua está melhor que a minha), gosto especialmente do coelho no 1º plano.
A Regaleira tem 1 enorme potencial fotográfico, tenho de lá voltar (agora que já vou sabendo mexer na máquina...).

Impresionante templo masonico, parece un palacio en el tope de la montaña, tu POV esta muy bueno permitiendo no solo poder admirar la bella estructura pero tambien la vista del valle al fondo. Muy buenos colores y definicion.
En tu foto anterior de Puerto Plata con el edificio de los masones, me tarde un poco en visitar tu foto porque me dio mucho trabajo en internet encontrar la informacion que te escribi.
Felicitaciones por tu foto y las que nos presentas en tu WS las cuales son estupendas tambien.

your POV to get this little detail of quite enigmantic looking place is fantastic. It gives the impression that you're flying over the castle and having a shoot of the balcony. Being part of the shooting cast of Polansky's movie? :-)
The only thing that I don't like very much is your cutting of the tip of the tower. Why did you do that? What I like is the partial off center of the tower giving view of the little town in the background.

une photo qui ne manque pas de profondeur grâce à un arrière plan très lointain, un tout bon POV en altitude a permis cela.
Les lumières et la mise au point sont parfaites sur cette églsie ce qui en rend un maximum de détails visibles.
C'est bien cadré.

Hello Jose, another impressive shot. The POV is perfect as the eye is naturally drawn into the scene along the diagonal of the image culminating with the distant city. The sharpness is perfect as well. This one is hard to criticize but two points I might address. First I would probably prefer the top of the weathervane not being interrupted like it is but perhaps it extended a great deal beyon the top of the building. Second, I feel like the little sliver of the building on the right edge adds some tension to the scene, perhaps if you had taken a step to the right for the shot (if possible), it would have eliminated that little piece. But of course, these are very very minor.

Magnífica arquitectura con unas bonitas torres. El encuadre es excelente y nos deja ver parte del entorno que le rodea.
