[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today I guess I must make a little break and show you some photos of Coimbra because yesterday was exactly the big day of Queima das Fitas, one of the greatest students festival that in this case lasts almost a week. Yesterday the festival had two great moments, when the students burn their ribbons and the parade. As I wasn’t working this time I went there and took a couple of photos. This is one of them. It shows a few students putting their ribbons in a big chamber pot (only a little part of them is going to be burnt) that according to the tradition is placed in the square of the New Cathedral, near the University. They burn the narrow ribbons that they got when they were attending the 3rd year of their courses and after burning them they take out the large ribbons; it means they are now on the 4th year, finishing their courses.
They are wearing the student’s suits and the colour of the ribbons change according to the courses, it this case as they are yellow and white, it means they are going to be nurses.
On this day the city, that is proud to have the oldest University of Portugal, practically stops to watch the festival and thousands of people come to join, including the students families, students from other universities and , of course, lots of tourists.

This is a change of style for you, Ana, usually your pictures are architectural ans strong ans still. This one catches a fleeting moment and rapid movement. It's very hard to capture these moments right and to freeze the action at the best place, but you have given a flavor of the event and your note is very interesting. regards Kevin

Parece ser interessante o festival, mas não entendi o objetivo dele? Como surgiu essas história de queimar fita? São estudantes de final de curso?

A cena em si, lembra algum ritual pagão, senão fosse o copo de refrigerante e os óculos escuros! :)
