| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
The first time I visited this place, some months ago, I was so impressed by this white beauty that I approached inmediately too much the building and I could not take a photo.
This second time during the fifth day of my travel to Lusitania I could calm walk from far to it and take this one in a nice day of August.
This building, the house of Hieronymite monks, is classified with nearby Torre de Belém as a World Heritage Site.
It has some relation to India: I have readen that it was constructed to commemorate the sucessful return of Vasco da Gama from India and was funded by a 5% tax on eastern spices. Within the monastery is the tomb of Vasco da Gama and Luis de Camoes, a poet and recorder of the portuguese discoveries.
Construction started in 1'502 and took 50 years to complete. It was designed in Manueline style, a late gothic style, by Diogo de Boitaca and the Spaniard Juan de Castillo. |
