Photographer's Note

Inaugurated in 25 of March of 1882, the Elevator of the Good Jesus of the Mount, in Braga, constituted the first one to funicular constructed in the Iberian Peninsula. The initiative of its construction had it the bracarense entrepreneur Manuel Joaquin Gomes and the direcção of respective projecto was of the Swiss engineer Nikolaus Riggenbach. This, that from its native country sent all the necessary indications for the construction of the Elevator, counted on the essential contribution practical technique and of the Portuguese engineer of French ancestry Raul Mesnier du Ponsard, that in Braga directed the execution of projecto.


The Elevator of the Good Jesus is currently oldest of the world in service to use the system of water counterbalance.
