Photographer's Note

The swallowtail (Papilio machaon) is an amazing butterfly, present in all the northern hemisphere. In North America (where this butterfly is called Old world swallowtail), it is more often replaced by endemic species like Papilio polyxenes (black swallowtail) or Papilio canadasiensis (canadian swallowtail). This butterfly becomes increasingly rare in France and I suppose in Europe.

This specimen was photographed in Portugal in the park of Palacio De Buçaco. Hunting home of the last Kings of Portugal, this impressive hotel, rich of history, is one of most famous in the world for its architecture, its comfort, its elegance, the sumptuousness of its park and its forests.
