Tough & Rugged IX: Cais do Sodre
This Lisbon railroad scene is perhaps as tough and rugged as it gets. Displayed here is a refurbished EMU (electrical multiple unit) from the Lisbon-Cascais service. The 30 years old stainless steel shell of these kind of trains is indestructible, they are the electric counterpart of the DMU (diesel etc.) displayed here) and here.
During renovation they were fitted with a flashy ABS nose and new smoked windows, fitted in a long dark band, ‘de rigueur’ for modern trains design. The train has interior stop indicators, air-conditioning, ambient music (....) , soundproofing and telephones.
The still nicely industrial looking result (some even call it ungainly bit I don’t agree with this) forms an appropriate combination with the I-beam modernist design of the also recently renovated platforms of the Cais do Sodre station. This station is part of an important Lisbon public transport hub as it’s adjacent to the Estação Fluvial (River-Ferry Terminal, with services to Cacilhas) and connects directly to the new terminus station of the Green Line metro.
PCS tech: corrected for perspective distortion, cropped, contrast, levels & curves adjusted USM-ed frame added and saved for the web.

The crispness of the photo is fantastic. The reflections bring a warmth ot the coldness of the marble and metal.
Thr framing is great too.

And here's a real "Bertolucci" again, modernity....
This one is perfect composed with the yellow part in the right and the iron pillar against in the left, perfect in balance.
Nice pic, Bert !

Hoi Bert,
Goed werk hier!
Fijn weekend,

A very precise and judicious framing job on this one, Bert. The verticals really deserve their name here, and the modern elements provided by the platform architecture and the train are well presented in this diagonal angle. The yellow and green colors are nice dashes amongst the mostly metallic surfaces and textures. Well done.

Dag Bert,

Goed werk! :-D

It goes well in your series of the rugged trains of Portugal. This one offers an interesting mix between tough and old and new and not so tough looking. The sides, with their exposed metal, offers the old feel while the yellow front almost looks like plastic in comparison. You really composed this one well, Bert, using all the lines to frame and bring the subject to life in its surroundings. And all sharp clear and colorful. Well done.

Hi Bert, I share pretty much Paul's impression here. An almost strange mix of old and new. Strange because it looks almost unrealistic, that carriage made of rugged steel and smooth yellow "plastic" as Paul sais. But that bold steel pylon on the left gives no chance to doubt, we're in the 21th century. BTW That pylon and the carriage make a strong play of lines, simple but powerful graphic impact. I also like the detail of the reflections on the carriage windows, specially the girl, a reflection of an outside element appearing inside. Very well caught Bert.

Hi Bert, back to your old 'love',
I like the way you framed the train on the left and at the top. It seems to lead the way for the train, if there were no rails, your framing would lead it where to go. I like the square and no nonsense appearance of this train.
Brazilian colors BTW.

Good shot, Bert, excellent compo, good note. Now that you mention it, it does look like you could drive this train through a building!
Best wishes,
Matt

Bert, I looked through your photos of railroads and Portugese system in particulary, and I like them so much!
You really know how to take photos, making each type of a train looking differently and interesting in its own unique way.
Great photos, real masterpieces!
