I'll return to my photos of Serra d'Ossa. Now it's time for a break to show one of the most Portuguese celebrations of Carnival in Portugal. It takes place in a village in the mountains, near Lamego. It's called Lazarim! Here, on Tuesday, the "caretos" (people wearing a mask like this one and also costumes) come to the street to show their originality. These masks are sculpted on alder wood, by a few artisans in the village. It takes many hours to do a mask like this one. Each participant has a new mask every year because there is a contest for the best masks and also for the best "caretos". The masks may have horns, moustache, snakes...This one was being used by a little boy that was participating for the first time. The festival has some important moments that I'll post later.

EXCELLENT, pity that the tops of the horns are cut off!

amazing it takes only hours to produce a mask like this, it would take me days and days :)

J'aimerais mieux le rencontrer en plein jour que dans la nuit noire. On peut même constater qu'il arbore un très beau sourire. J'aime l'arrière plan de pailles un peu flou.

I was expecting this mask as a pure product of Africa, rather than from Portugal, but maybe it has its origins long ago in the african traditions and ceremonies ??
A good clear and sharp image anyway well in the spirit of TE to learn from photographies
have a nice day

Hi Ana - nice crisp portrait of this boy and his impressive mask. Do the wearers generally make these themselves? If so, I'm doubly impressed as this shows very good craftsmanship. The addition of the red netting he is wearing brings nice color to the shot - thanks!

Very interesting and different Carnival image. The details on this mask are great, and I like the red color that the boy is wearing. It's a vivid and sharp photo.

Carnival are always great places to shoot nice photos.
I like this close-up shot that it shows details of the mask.
The photo has good depth of field, colors, light and sharpness.
