August 5, 2011, 6.24 pm. As the Crystal Serenity sailed out of Lisbon, bound for Gibraltar, I was on the top deck, 13 stories above the water. The vantage point revealed the silhouettes of a few people standing on the Starboard Side Flying Bridge, as well as the majestic "25th of April Bridge," crossing the Tagus River. Portugal's famous explorer's of the 15th and 16th centuries are honored with monuments on the Starboard side, and a massive sculpture of Christ is seen on the Port side.
Measuring 2278 m in total length, with 1013 m span between its giant pylons, the "25th of April Bridge" is listed as the 21st largest suspension bridge in the world. It was initially inaugurated on August 6, 1966 as the "Salazar Bridge." However, with the Carnation Revolution in 1974, the bridge was renamed, "25 de Abril Bridge," commemorating the very day of the revolution. Earlier in the day I had been with my Portuguese Trekearth friends, José Pires, Ana das Dores and Gonçalo Gomes, seen in an earlier workshop. What a pleasure it was to accompany them on a walking tour of the city.
Postscript. B&W vs Color. Several viewers commented about the B&W format in the photo. In reality, this image is in color format. In the accompanying ws, I selectively enhanced the sky, enhancing those subdued colors resulting from shooting into the sun. I would be grateful for a comment on your choice.

Hi Bulent, A fine vantage point to see such an impressive bridge ahead. The light and polarizer has mad this virtually a black and white with tinges of silver rail. Good to see this series around Europe. TFS. Murray

unusual glance on the famous bridge in Lisboa. Amazing effect of light reflection and silhuettes of peoples. An interesting informations.
Have a nice day.

I like both the composition (very precise) and the atmosphere here. There is a fine combination of vertical and horizontal lines and the contra-light makes the image mysterious. The silhouetted people look very important, some V.I.P. or top politicians having a secret meeting in a cruising ship... discussing world affairs, maybe... (:-)
Lisbon has the advantage of vast empty spaces and this very photogenic bridge which offers good opportunities to the photographer. I'm going to Porto for a few days next October, it seems an interesting city. Ever been there yourself?
Have a nice Sunday,

I like this back light shot very much, actually I love to do it myself as well. It has turned the water into silver and the persons to silhouettes. It is a very bold message with its excellent light management.
JFS (32459) 2011-09-04 3:11
Very nice composition with silvery light and good play of shadows. The huge bridge gives a perfect balance to the picture. Good work!

You took full advantage of your high vantage point to create a very interesting and mood composition. Something accentuated by the use of black and white.
macondo (19806) 2011-09-04 4:19
Absolutely marvellous silvery sheen on the water in this one, and a most intriguing composition which, together with your excellent note, gives a double meaning to the title, which can be seen to refer to the two bridges. The photo captures the evening light and atmosphere very well; how lucky you were to be able to travel like that.
I have looked at the photo a while and I now see that it is not the monochrome I thought it to be. I see definite hues of blue and pink in the sky.
Very well done.
kato (11630) 2011-09-04 6:23
You're capturing well seascapes and bridge from ship' deck by a good composition and excellent tone, so it's impressive and interesting to see the light shining sea, a beautiful arched bridge, and people gather on the deck of a ship. The entire configuration is well thought.

I really like this one!

A rare quiet few hours, allows me to catch up with my trekking !
A marvelous image of this famous bridge, which looks just as if its taken at night by moonlight. Such is the strange effect of shooting into the low sun..
You have composed this very neatly, with the combination of lines, esp the exact realtionship of the hand rail of the ship and the bridge. I can imagine you stretching, or maybe squatting, to get the POV just so...

Very tricky, I think, to manage such strong light in this photo. But the resulting image and vertical format have a timeless graphic look to me, reminiscent of old Art Deco travel posters. Very successful.
Best regards, Steve

What a magnificent bridge with a large shadow on the water surface, fantastic lighting effect, impressive view at afternoon, creative frame with include visitors at foreground, distinct image, well done.
Suppiluliuma (3931) 2011-09-04 22:49
What a beautiful picture against the nicely lit Tagus River. The monochrome atmosphere adds to the charm of the shot. My only nit-picking would be to avoid the hand-rail and have a lower angle to approach the models to the bridge, and maybe also to include the tip of the bridge.
What a pleasure to meet TE friends in different locations during a cruise trip.

You know that I not am fan of black and white, technical is these picture excellent.
The horizontal dark bridge care for contrast against the silver shine on water
Excellent perspective image through the perfect angle.
Composition and presentation are truly wonderful despite black and white image.
Very well done, TFS.
PS: I send again the PP, all my friends can open these PP!

Merhaba dear Bulent
I see you've broken all the "rules" here and to great effect. The silvery tones are really wonderful and you have again achieved that sparkling water effect, as in your previous post. The cherry on the cake is of course the Bridge. I have seen it from many angles, but not this one. And it is stupendous. I like the vertical framing, the inclusion of the people enjoying the view and the superb definition. Wonderful job and I'm so happy you got to meet our Portugese friends. Like Malgo, you;re fast becoming an international embassador for TE :)

A great magical image, Bulent. The light is wonderful, as in a dream, and people are like strange phantoms, in the middle darkness...A dream of a night of middle Summer?
rodgerg (55767) 2011-09-06 1:38
A very original, cretaive, artistic, efficience presnetation of this famous bridge. I like your composition with the silhouet of the peoples in the Fg nad the very graphic bridge in the BG. The particulary light give a.... particulary athmsopher to the shot, an athmopsher a little mysterious but too very pleasant.

Hello Professor Atalay,
It is like a Sumi painting. The effect of the photo is almost B&W. The reflection on the water surface is silvery in colour. It is a wonderful image. Whenever I am confronted with an image like this one, speaking of technicality seems unnecessary. The impression of the photo is so powerful that all the logic appears helpless before the image. You make a logical approach to creating an image, but once the decision is made, you simply execute it, and then you take away the logic you have used to arrive at the result. What a brilliant way to arrive at this photo. Perfect balance of logic and emotion is harmoniously demonstrated.
With my at most compliments, Professor.
Very best regards,
Have a great week ahead,

Sailing with the Serenity gave you opportunity of weeing the places from quite unique perspective. Like here, the famous 25th April bridge looks very original here. Strange rgat teh photo is in colour, the dominating here is this silvery surface of tagus. I nteresting effect created by the light. Interesting photo and nice atmosphere of the big adventure ahead of you.
I looked at the Serenity cruises. They are VERY expensive. Something like 7000 USD for 12 days. I will not go with them :).
Am I TE Ambassador??
Thanks for your kind words.

It seems we as the viewers are on top of the deck now.. I really like this composition n the role of the lines plus the shot's mysterious darkness.. a great successful image.. tfs

In this scene, the angle of lighting gives a very interesting optical effect making the picture looking highly aesthetic and beautiful. Due to this impressiveness of the picture is absolutely excellent. Perfectly good job!

Bien vu Bulent,

This view of the pit and the bridge is very good and original. I really like the silhouettes on the sunshine on the water.
Excellent light and depth achieved.
vasilpro (41661) 2011-09-11 2:35
Wonderful composition almost as a B&W, beautiful atmosphere, lovely light reflective on the water surface, excellent POV, the people silhouettes are nicely placed in the frame, very nice impression.
Have a nice Sunday, Vasilis.

Hello dear Bulent,
like on your previous shot, we admire the romantic play of the shadows against the light. Your position assure the best composition with the nice view of the bridge. So skill realization dear friend. warm regards,

Taking photos till the last minute, right:)? I need to post some more of the meeting. I like this one. Seems almost in b&w and the silhouettes of the people are perfect with the water as background. I really like the reflection of the sunlight on the water.
worldcitizen (9382) 2011-09-11 11:45
Hello again Bulent,
This composition is very elegant and beautiful. I like the way the cruise ship and bridge intersect, creating a right angle on the left side of the frame. I also like the silhouettes of people on the bridge, and the light glistening off the water. Looking at the WS version, I prefer the original presentation. :-)
Angshu (56760) 2011-09-17 6:43
Hello Professor 'A'
As I had written before, this picture is almost in monochrome except for the hint of blue in the sky. The bridge railing has been used well as perspective. The silhouette of the men against the shimmering waters is the main interest here & makes the picture very interesting. Well done!
With Warm Regards
CLODO (35754) 2011-09-17 11:48
you were at the right place to focus on the bridge and incorporate tourists on the boat deck, also contemplingthis architecture. Silver river due to the oppossite sun.
danos (103150) 2011-09-24 9:05
romantic the scenery from the deck of the Crystal Serenity with the travelers to enjoy the view of the moon as its reflections on the 'silver' surface of the sea.I like the texture of the 25th of April bridge,as visual connected with the vertical line, created from the side flying bridge of the cruise ship. The meeting with the three Portugese trekkers would was a great experience i think, as walking with them a tour of the city.

You have used the strong daylight to make a very interesting picture looking like a beautiful moon reflection on the water. I saw this spectacular bridge during my recent trip to Lisbon and I also crossed it a few times. Next time I'll publish some pictures of my trip to Portugal.
Have a great day.

ashres (1055) 2011-10-14 7:15
A nice photo with great management of lines. The lightening with reflection is good. The symmetric gap between the bridge and horizon is worthy here. nice realization of the moment. nice capture,
have a great time,

Ciao dear Bulent,
very difficult to capture a photo with this strong light, you have certainly shown to be an excellent photographer. The details in the backlight are well evident and the scene is pleasant and interesting. A photo that is also a good reminder of your meeting with Portuguese friends. Excellent shot!
