Photographer's Note

August 5, 2011, 6.24 pm. As the Crystal Serenity sailed out of Lisbon, bound for Gibraltar, I was on the top deck, 13 stories above the water. The vantage point revealed the silhouettes of a few people standing on the Starboard Side Flying Bridge, as well as the majestic "25th of April Bridge," crossing the Tagus River. Portugal's famous explorer's of the 15th and 16th centuries are honored with monuments on the Starboard side, and a massive sculpture of Christ is seen on the Port side.

Measuring 2278 m in total length, with 1013 m span between its giant pylons, the "25th of April Bridge" is listed as the 21st largest suspension bridge in the world. It was initially inaugurated on August 6, 1966 as the "Salazar Bridge." However, with the Carnation Revolution in 1974, the bridge was renamed, "25 de Abril Bridge," commemorating the very day of the revolution. Earlier in the day I had been with my Portuguese Trekearth friends, José Pires, Ana das Dores and Gonçalo Gomes, seen in an earlier workshop. What a pleasure it was to accompany them on a walking tour of the city.

Postscript. B&W vs Color. Several viewers commented about the B&W format in the photo. In reality, this image is in color format. In the accompanying ws, I selectively enhanced the sky, enhancing those subdued colors resulting from shooting into the sun. I would be grateful for a comment on your choice.
