TE Meeting Lisbon 2010-02-27
This was taken in TE Meeting in Lisbon on the 27th March.
In this meeting participated the following people:
Miguel (nszeretlek) from Spain and his wife Annette, Goncalo Lopes(Bluejeans), Filipe (Sacavem), Aires (AiresSantos) and his friend Cidalia Bolacha and myself.
This is the eastern side of The Jeronimos' monastery, where is installed The Maritime Museum.
The Maritime Museum (Portuguese: Museu de Marinha) of Lisbon is dedicated to all aspects of the History of navigation in Portugal. The museum is administered by the Portuguese Navy and is located in the touristic district of Belém. It occupies a part of the neo-Manueline Western wing of the Jerónimos Monastery (together with the National Museum of Archaeology) as well as a modern annex built to the North of the monastery.
The history of the museum is deeply related to King Luís I (1838-1889), who was a lover of oceanographic studies and an accomplished navigator himself. He created in 1863 a collection of items related to the preservation of maritime history of Portugal, a collection that was enlarged in the following decades, culminating in the inauguration of the Maritime Museum in 1963 in its present location.
The exhibits include historical paintings, archaeological items and many scale models of ships used in Portugal since the 15th century. It is one of the most visited Portuguese museums.
Monastery of Jeronimos
Build in the sixteenth century, this monastery close to the river banks has been the burial ground for the royal family for over four centuries. In this monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the monks of the Order of St. Jerome used to pray for the well being of the Portugese king's soul and for the succes of the sailors that discovered the world's seas in his name. It is an excellent example of the Manueline style, a typical crossover between late medieval and early renaissance architecture, even though it was severely redecorated in the nineteenth century. Pay attention to the net vaults and the elegant columns of the Santa Maria monastery church. Most famous is the inner cloister, at the moment beeing renovated. Already declared a National Monument in 1907, it became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984.

Hello Paulo ,
I suppose that the light was not the best . So , you 've to do an heavy PP . It is a pitty , because this church is superb , and the composition is excellent , with the sculpture in the FG . The whole picture is quite pleasant , but there is some lost of details on the facade .
pazufferey (4858) 2010-03-09 9:17
Splendid building, a beautiful architecture that you show us in this beautiful composition. Framing is perfect and the sky reinforces the whole.
Cheer, of the pretty work
lucasgalodoido (23581) 2010-03-09 9:46
Belo trabalho.
Parabéns e Abraço

this frame haz nice perspective and architecture.
belido (19934) 2010-03-09 11:32

hardyuno (4650) 2010-03-09 12:09
the POv with the vertical framing is really excellent. it gives height to the spires. Very good is the mortar in FG as eyecatcher. I like the colours and the contrasts, too. Fine photo, tfs
Have a fine evening

less known, interesting view of the Mosteiro. Beautiful details and nice graphics of the pavement. Excellent composition and nice colours in spite of the not favorable weather. Nice workshop photos too. Good memories from the meeting.

darek1978 (13361) 2010-03-11 14:25
A very good presentation with a great balance in the composition. I am also happy to see the list of many friends from TE. Thanks a lot for a very interesting WS. I´m sure you had a very good time!

The weather was not on your side and I really do not know what I would had done. The composition is perfect, the problem you had was the awful light. At one hand the photograph is very dramatic, even bold I would say, but at the other side the light was weak. You really made the best possible, well done. Thanks for your critique of my shot from the Tamil festival in Alor Star.
Best regards my friend

Great POV in your shot! The sky is wonderful and the architecture splendid.
Have a nice evening.
fabianoleite (11813) 2010-03-12 12:33

What excellent light and the colours are perfect. A beautiful image of the very nice church architecture. Well done.
Longroute (19396) 2010-03-25 3:40
A very fine monastery well framed and well photographed in spite of the bad weather. Is it an HDR? It looks quite good both in sharpness and colours. A very good idea to set the cannon in fg: it's a good focal point and gives depth. The lines in the paviment give a fine perspective.
You always manage to produce high quality photos even in adverse conditions.
adramad (47690) 2010-03-25 11:27
Splendid monument for a great shot, I like the vertical framing of this front, perhaps the least known, good POV for this type of cannon in the foreground and the beautiful pavement that creates a good graphics. The light is a little difficult, but well resolved, good color and good presentation framework.
rodgerg (55767) 2010-03-26 4:26

gentedilivello (3103) 2010-03-29 14:17
great architecture taken from a perfect POV. Sharpness and colors are amazing. Great texture in the pavement.
mkamionka (39179) 2010-03-31 1:49
very original POV to the monastery. I have been there and did not realize that it looks so attractive from this side. Great composition too with excellent pavement as usually so attractive in Portugal. Pity that you did not have more light but I see you managed pretty well with very good PP.
Beautiful place, great work,
pablominto (53746) 2010-04-06 22:47
The play of light in the sky makes a great background, enhancing the architecture!
Good idea to make use of the old gun to create depth in the composition, pin sharp details in the monastery...
gervaso (15801) 2010-04-07 11:06
Enquadramento simplesmente perfeito! Muito boas cores também! Belo trabalho!
Greg1949 (9011) 2010-06-04 8:05
Paulo, this is a great sight and the capture of the subtle light differences in the shadows is very nicely done. Great details as well.
AnaRita (1741) 2010-06-25 11:08
maloutim (9639) 2010-07-07 1:06
Bom dìa Paulo!
I visited the "Mosteiro dos Jeronimos" in 1986, and I don't really remember this POV, so I am glad to be reminded of it 24 years later!!
This is a good POV with the church and part of the monastery on the left: The towers are very elegant.
I also like the way we can guess the rest of the monastery in a perpendicular line, on the right.
As for the pavings of the praça, so typically Portuguese, they look very effective. The decorations are canon balls aren't they?
Agradecimento por a partilha. Cumprimentos.
yeln (11516) 2010-10-08 2:29

Jerónimos Monastery from a different POV than the usual seen, Paulo.
Dramatic sky and shaded ligt created this scenery over the corner of towers.
