Tomar is famous mainly for its fantastic Templar Castle. However I wasn’t going to visit it until I have seen in the DK guidebook (lonely planet and plenty of other guides show just artistic images which have no informative value at all) a photo similar to this presented here. When I saw this square I knew I have to visit this town.
It is a very good example of the interesting pavement, the issue which I have mentioned before. Pavements in Portugal, especially on important town squares, have always unique pattern which makes it really attractive and different. I have never seen such a variety of pavement patterns before.
Tomar was founded as headquarters of the Knights Templar in Portugal in the 12th century and contains some of the most significant Templar monuments in Europe. Tomar was especially important in the 15th century when it was a centre of Portuguese overseas expansion under Henry the Navigator, the Grand Master of the Order of Christ, successor organization to the Templars in Portugal.
Church of Saint John the Baptist (São João Baptista): The main church of Tomar is located in the main square of the town, in front of the Municipality (17th century) and a modern statue of Gualdim Pais. The church was built between the 15th and 16th centuries and has many interesting artistic details, like the flamboyant Gothic portal, the Manueline tower with a 16th century clock, the decorated capitals of the inner columns of the nave and several panels painted in the 1530s by one of Portugal's best Renaissance artists, Gregório Lopes.

A beautiful wide angle view in which the tiling creates a stunning effect and an introduction to the many elements to discover in this view.

Good morning Mariusz!
This pavement really creates an amazing effect and it's a not to surpass contrast to the old buildings around. An interesting - and stunning photo from an advantageous angle.
Greetings from Germany!

A simple view made interesting by the pov that you have chosen, and by the use of the wide angle lens, which makes the patternon the floor very graphycal and hypnotic.
very nice work

Very interesting and truly beautiful picture!
Sharpness, exposure, dof and colors are excellent!
The pov was very well chosen and that ground full of eye-catching graphism was perfectly captured by you... yes, the composition is superb!

Niezla szachownica. Gratuluje! Bardzo ladne zdjecie!

swietnie to wyglada, bdb kontrast kolorystyczny, piekna architektura i te wzory na nawierzchni placu. Podoba mi sie tutaj bardzo.

I think you're right about the pavements in Portugal. Here on TE we find lots of pictures taken in different places in the country that show very interesting patterns in the pavements.
The strange thing is that when I visited Portugal 24 years ago I didn't notice that. I cannot imagine that I was that little attentive. So the Portuguese must have started later with these magnificent pavements.
You've taken the picture of this square from the right angle.
The alternating white and black stones of the square contrast strong with the blue sky in which we cannot find the smallest cloud.
Best regards, Paul

Well framed with this graphical foreground, lovely place and good result with this strong contrast of tones.
lightsensor (757) 2009-09-30 23:19
good wide and low angle shot! i like you "burn" the sky, so that the "blue" looks darker and sharp; also it creates contrast between this interesting ground and buildings. nice job!
sevy (15359) 2009-10-01 5:07
I like the idea of this composition using the pattern on the ground to put a visual interest as well as driving the look in deepness inside the place.
The tiny people in background increase this feeling.

Hi Mariusz. I have some pictures of this church too (I'll post one, one of these days) but only in thaat angle we get the sense of dizzy. Great details on the floor and a composition well mastered. GReat colors and definition. Nice job. Best regards. PAulo

MNIAM!

Gratki.

I cannot resist the attraction which this checkerwork exerts, which ends up tiring the glance, because it unceasingly makes move the eyes. The light, the colors, clearness, the composition, all is a great success. A very deserved success. Congratulations.
Have a nice day.

Nice image full of light but the best about it is this superb pavement providing nice graphical effect as well as setting depth
have a nice day JY

Hi, Mariusz. The geometrical patterns of the square pavement give a nice graphic aspect to your foreground, enhanced by the wide angle. The white buildings with their red roofs stand out very well against the deep blue sky. Very good colours and light management.
Have a nice evening,
adores (36183) 2009-10-05 15:21
Yor right, the pavement really creates a wonderful effect here. I like your pov, with the church and the buildings in background. Seems you even got a pigeon and some people in background:)!
AiresSantos (56155) 2009-10-06 1:09
wonderful pattern in the ground. Fine low POV, colours and light management
Regards my friend
Dyerco (10185) 2009-10-30 7:25
Good use of the wide angle and polarizer. I like what the wide angle did with the tile pattern also the red roof stands out well against the rest of the sky.

Nice view with your 10-22, good choice, polarization is strong but i like it..Stéphane

The checkered floor is magnificent, and highlights the beautiful constructions on the back. Excellent composition, congratulations!

Do jakiegoś celu.
Świetnie to pomyślałeś z niskiego ujęcia.
Wiele tu jest w szarościach i bielach.
I tylko rudy dach budynku i głębokie niebo mają inną barwę.
Bardzo jest ciekawa ta pozorna monotonia koloru.
Ciekawa notka do tego.
Pozdrowienia serdeczne Tomek

Hi Mariusz, yes the cheques are dizzying but the low POV provides such a dynamic and graphic effect. I love the cobalt tones of the sky they contrast beautifully against the the red roofs and white walls. Great job, TFS and I wish you a good day, Lisa
iainsp (2626) 2010-08-10 5:18
This one goes straight in to my favourites. Very impressive work with really good management of the light - I like the way you have 'got away' with having the church facade in the shade - many would consider this a major feature and be disappointed that the sun wasn't on it - you have worked well with this 'weakness'.
jafadabret (56501) 2010-08-27 9:45
kennyblack (4207) 2012-10-29 8:38
Choose a photo to be able to comment on your gallery ... is very difficult because they are all beautiful. I stopped on this for the 'optical effect of the plates that catches the eye then extending it to the whole composition very well designed and built. Colors, lights, shadows, sharpness, POV ... specimens. Thank you for having shared.
The best greetings, have a nice day ... Marino

Just came across this one in the critiques page and I'm surprised that I did not comment it yet
An outstanding and striking picture indeed
The scene of of the houses and the church is nice but of course what makes all the difference here is the large FG with the chess pavement, giving the feeling that we will slowly slide to the left without being able to prevent it
Dizzy, you said !? Sure do !!
Have a nice WE
